Tufts' Reputation

Yeah, and in another post lizzygreat, you said you dropped several of your classes and only took 2 classes last semester. Also, you said you were an SMFA student. You even mentioned the specific classes you took - none of them IR or language. Hmmm. Something doesn’t add up. Not sure if it’s your sole intent to ■■■■■ the boards and bash Tufts in any way possible, but I urge you to stop. It’s not fair to the high schoolers out there who are actually looking for sound and legitimate advice. I’m not saying that Tufts has no faults, just that you shouldn’t make them up to prove a point, whatever your point happens to be.

I am hazarding a guess that lizzagreat is a parent peeved that her child did not get into Tufts or a rejected Tufts applicant. So much is not only hostile but also inconsistent in his/her posts, thus undercutting any credibility. At all.

“The foreign language department has very low reputation”<—what language is that?

Daughter has a few friends doing foreign language at Tufts, currently–Arabic, Spanish, and Mandarin. Albeit the Arabic and Mandarin are challenging, the students say that the curriculum and professors are stellar. So much for “very low reputation.”

What did Tufts ever do to you, Lizzy?

I’d almost prefer to believe that there’s some really unhappy freshman than to believe that an adult with 4 decades of life experience would do something like that.

also, just for the record, the japanese department here is amazing. the program is quite rigorous, but every professor i’ve had so far are really great and care a LOT about how much progress their students are making.
Also, what other program in this nation would offer english-language classes on both Haruki Murakami and Hayao Miyazaki? that’s just awesome.

Not to be a snob, but I doubt anyone who writes like Lizzie could have been admitted to Tufts. My guess is that she’s bitter about being rejected and is trying to get revenge by smearing the school.

I appreciate lizzy’s opinion and will take it into account before applying (or not) this fall.

^^You should do as you please, but at best her opinions are so out of the mainstream that I can’t imagine why you’d consider them of any value and at worst she is a ■■■■■.

My daughter, currently doing a Gap year before she starts Tufts, this Fall, just met two Tufts students, doing their junior year in the country where my daughter is. The girls couldn’t say enough about how much they loved their Tufts experience (their profs, their classes, their friends). Both girls were two girls my daughter could see herself being friends with, and my daughter, it turns out, will be spending this weekend visiting one of them.

It was a nice and serendipitous reaffirming of what my daughter sensed and had already heard about Tufts.

I don’t know too many other colleges that would give a college freshman the money to do research overseas during winter break.

Can anyone give a reasoned perspective on the quality of the language programs at Tufts?

I’ve found the language program to be really, really good here. Challenging, too, but in a way that’s worth it. Most language classes are designed around the theory of complete immersion, meaning you and the professor speak mostly in that language from day one. The teachers really know what helps and what doesn’t help in learning a language; I definitely feel that all of my homework has a purpose and teaches me something. Basically, I don’t have anything negative to say about languages at Tufts - I don’t really think they can get any better.

I’m sure at this point my reply matters very little to you. However, I will say with pride that I have a friend who has not only been recruited by Goldman for a summer internship, but who is now also being lobbied, by the top officials of departments within the company, for his employment this summer. AKA: Officials at Goldman have been calling him, begging him to work in their respective departments.

Still unimpressed?

The information on languages at Tufts is very helpful. Thank you.

I got accepted RD into Tufts this year, and although I was pretty upset because I didn’t get in anywhere via Questbridge, Tufts seems like a good place for me. Reading this thread has given me mixed feelings, but there are a lot of passionate people that advocate Tufts, and that seems great.

(Now I’m just crossing my fingers and hoping for a good financial package…because if I don’t get it, I’m going to a SUNY. Please be kind, Tufts…)

Good luck, ncynegai. I hope your package is good.

As for this thread, keep in mind that it was started in 2007 and has had quite a number of characters contributing to it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished it would die a merciful death. There have been lots of times I’ve vowed not to contribute to it, not wanting to contribute to any resurrection a lot of the more peculiar stuff. Here I am, breaking that rule one more time. But all in the pursuit of reason! As I said, good luck to you.

One of this year’s RD admits wrote on the 2015 facebook page that during Chicago’s election season, Rahm Emmanuel came by on a campaign swing. He asked the student where he/she was going to go to college. The student listed some possibilities. Emmanuel said to choose Tufts. As the student said, that’s an endorsement that’s pretty hard to ignore. :)

Thank you Seashore!

Good news, I got my financial package today, and was utterly shocked. I got $55,550 and I only have to pay $1,200 (not including work-study). I’m amazed at how much I received, and extremely grateful…I’ll be at Tufts Open House later this April. Thank you so much Tufts  !

Congratulations nycnegai, that is wonderful news! I’ve sometimes read on this board that the Tufts financial aid is lacking, but I’ve had a number of my interviewees choose Tufts specifically because of the nice aid package. Glad to hear that you are in that same group.

Congratualtions, nycnegai. Best of luck,

I can’t believe this tread is still around and generates interest.
