Hey,
Obviously Tufts is a safety for Columbia, Brown, Penn, etc. But what schools are safeties for Tufts? Like, Tufts takes roughly 1/4 the kids that apply, where do the other 3/4 go? For instance my friend at Hobart said it was a big safety for Trinity for some reason. Any ideas? I'm just curious cuz I go to Tufts and I'm not from around here

Northeastern, BU to an extent, being in Boston. mine were BU and GW.

lol and harvard. we dump our rejects there.

I'm applying to Tufts and my safeties are Rutgers and BU.

Actually, per both schools websites, Penn's Mid 50% ranges for accepted students last year were Verbal 660-760 and Math 680-780 versus Tufts Verbal 670-760 and Math 680-760. I would hardly say that makes the later a safety school of the former, but hey, the difficulty of admission to Tufts is consistantly underestimated on these boards so I'm not surprised by your statement, even if it is from a current student. In response to the orginial question, for true safeties probably schools like American, UMass, Providence, Northeastern, etc. BU, GW, Brandeis and the like are probably matches if Tufts is a reach.

Well, I just said that because I know kids here who didn't get into Penn who would have liked to go. But I also know a kid at Penn who didn't get in here so maybe that wasnt the best example. I do feel like a ton of kids here wanted to go to Brown or Columbia though. Tufts is hard to get into, i mean as I said before only about 1/4 of the kids who apply actually get in.

Yeah, I wouldn't disagree that many kids had Brown or Columbia as their first choice, especially Brown. The schools are very similar and with Brown being more selective its not surprising that Tufts would be option 1A for kids that really wanted to go there. I think there is a fine line between a "backup option" and a "safety school" though. Tufts may be a solid match school for applicants with a realistic shot at reach schools like Columbia and Brown, similar to how BU would be a solid match school for a student with a realistic shot at Tufts as a reach. If the student winds up at option 1A that doesn't make it a safety school, more like a "Plan B." I don't think many students who do their homework on the process end up at their true safety school unless it is for financial reasons or a great personal preference.

I don't really follow your BU analogy, I think the difference between Tufts and BU selectivity is much greater than that of Brown and Tufts, but I guess whether you call it "safety school" or "backup option" a lot of kids who go here did not have tufts as their first choice. Since 75% of the applicants to Tufts are rejected (approx. 10-12 thousand) I posed the question to find out what happens to the rest of them. We know where the Brown rejects are...

you may be right about selectivity, but BU does still have a very good reputation an dtherefore attracts lots of very strong students who may have gotten rejected from a school like tufts.

wow i am suprised this didn't get more replies.

My safeties were American, Catholic, Tulane(because of situation), and BU.

However, I also applied to: BC, Brandeis, Richmond, Wake Forest, and GW

my safeties were SUNY schools and northeastern.
matches: nyu, bu, gw, etc.

and tufts was a reach then? I am just trying to place tufts on the grand scale of admissions

yea tufts was a reach and brown and penn.

Yeah,

Tufts, Brandeis and Wake were my reaches...not big reaches, but never thought I would get into Tufts.

My safeties were SUNY - Binghamton, Hamilton College, Colgate University, Dickinson Collge, and Ursinus College

My safeties were the UC's with my reaches being Cornell and Dartmouth though I applied ED to Tufts.

The year I applied, I knew a few people who got into Penn but not into Tufts.

Tufts was my safety - with Harvard, MIT, and Williams being the other schools I applied to (with two rejections and a waitlist).

If Tufts is a reach/match, your safeties would probably be BC, Brandeis, Holy Cross, and maybe some of the smaller LACs - maybe Colby? There's also Smith, BU, Holyoke, UMass, UConn, Northeastern, NYU, etc.

That's my guess.

brown was my #1 (i got rejected ed). now tufts/northwestern are where i'd looove to go, and i also applied to wesleyan, gw, american, and ohio state

Tufts isn't that much of a safety for a lot of people. I had a friend who got into Duke and Cornell and not Tufts, and another who got into Emory and not Tufts. It's my first choice now, but I doubt I'll get in.

thats what i thought too cats. you never know what they are looking for, i work in admissions and i see so many qualified applications go through i have no idea how they pick
