So I heard that to apply to the school of engineering, you need a Math SAT II and either a physics or chem SAT II. I took a math SAT II, but not chem or physics, and probably won't in the fall. So I was wondering, could I apply to Arts and Sciences, then transfer to engineering in my freshman year? I know that's allowed, but is it advisable (ie will there be too much catching up to do)?

School of Engineering
OPTION 1: SAT Reasoning Test and two SAT Subject Tests: one Math exam (Math Level I or II) and one science exam (either Physics or Chemistry). (When taken multiple times, we will use your highest sub-score for each section.)
OPTION 2: ACT with the Writing Section.
(When taken multiple times, we will use your highest sub-score for each section.)

I don’t know if it’s easy to transfer. If you had ACT with writing, you are OK.

I did not take ACT with writing

I have a few friends who have made the transfer from Arts and Sciences to Engineering. As long as you take courses that fall under the engineering requirements, there won’t be much you’ll miss outside of a few freshman engineering courses that you’ll have to make up for (which isn’t too difficult I don’t think).

First year engineers typically take an intro engineering course
called ES93, calculus 1, physics and english first semester and then an engineering programming course called ES2, calculus 2, physics or chemistry and a humanities elective second semester. After that, a minimum of five courses per semester are required to meet the 38 course minimum requirement for an engineering degree.

Here is a good presentation of typical requirements and prerequisites for an engineering degree.

I am pretty sure ES93 is open to liberal arts students (can a current student verify this?), so I would recommend signing up for the typical engineering course load first semester and see how you like it.

Here is some info on the first year engineering curriculum

FYI: when my son was looking at Tufts Engineering, there was a young woman who spoke at the Engineering Open House day who had been accepted to A&S and transferred to Engineering months before school ever started.

How does the admissions rate for engineering compare with the overall admissions rate? I thought I saw somewhere that the admissions rate was a little bit higher (better) for engineering at Tufts?

^^If that’s true, it might be because, assuming solid test scores and transcripts, women have a decided advantage as applicants at most engineering schools. That might bring up the overall admit rate.

For this year, I think the acceptance rate overall was like 18%, but for Engineering, it was ~19%, so it is slightly higher, but only marginally. However, the accepted students in Engineering had higher SAT scores than A&S.

^^I suspect that the average Math scores are higher in Engineering but that the CR scores are a bit lower.

Does Tufts publish the average SAT II scores of incoming students? I scored a 760 on Math 2 and a 710 on Physics, but I have no comparison point other than the collegeboard’s percentiles.

I remember seeing some information on that at the end of last year’s cycle - I can’t remember specifics, but it’s closely aligned with what you’d see for the general SATs.

If it’s any consolation, I’m currently in the School of Engineering and scored a 760 on Math II as well.
