Tufts syndrome? JHU

I was just wondering, does johns hopkins waitlist kids just b/c they don't believe that the kids will go there? I just got waitlisted by Johns Hopkins, which is my first choice. I know that I might seem like the type of applicant who might be more interested in MIT or CalTech but I applied to JHU for money reasons.

So please give me your opinions

Nah, honestly, I think JHU is too top-tier to do something like that.

I was wondering the same thing.

For money reasons? What do you mean? I wasn't particularly thrilled with their financial aid package.

i 2nd that jhu has tufts syndrome

Never heard about JHU having Tufts syndrome. It accepts a lot of kids from daughter's school every year, and their school statistics very clearly shows that all qualifying candidates are always accepted accepted. It also looks that JHU really goes by stats.

I'm pretty sure my high stats got me in.

3rd the Tufts Syndrome. According to my school's Naviance, I should have easily gotten in; but I'm waitlisted (2310/4.45)

Hopkins' admit rate is less than 30%; it doesn't have, nor need, Tufts Syndrome. Many kids with excellent stats don't get in.

hopkins doesnt have tufts syndrone... but that less than 30% rate thing doesnt make sense, considering both washu and tufts have pretty low admission rates...

Last I heard, JHU's yield rate was pretty low, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was doing was yield protection.

Its acceptance rate is 24%, according to CB.

^

Agree.

Damn them for waitlisting me. >(

I got waitlisted too.
just wondering how many waitlisted kids actually get in?

^ Depends on the year. Anywhere from 0 to over 100, based on the past few years.

I doubt most kids choose to stay on the waitlist.

EDIT: Post from last year: Hopkins Insider: A Post for Those on the Wait List

I'd say money reasons.

Hopkins, like Wash U, is NOT need blind. All other top 20 universities are. If you applied for financial aid, that may well have played a major role in your waitlist.

so, they want people who do not need financial aid?

Does JHU use yield protection??

I'm a little bit worried.

I just found out I was waitlisted there...but I made it into Duke's top 350 applicants....

2300 SAT/ 2320 superscored...4.5 GPA...and tons of extracurriculars w/ continued involvement....

Gah....actually I'm really worried....

ok, so I'm usually very against the whole conspiracy theory of tufts syndrome, but this is beginning to seem legitimate. just wondering-did any of you visit campus etc? i just kinda tacked it on last minute, but recently discovered what an incredible school it really is... unfortunately too late to impact my "interest". i was also waitlisted with a 2330 sat, and i'm one of the top 10 students in my class, oh well, I guess I'll see what happens tomorrow with ivies...

I too am wondering what's going on with Hopkins.

I know i shouldnt have this sense of entitlement, but i thought i had a fair shot. According to naviance my chances were solid even with SAT scores at 700 M 720 R and a 3.7 ish gpa. I saw a guy with a 3.4 get in and lower SAT's get in...

But I also had won best in category at ISEF in medicine and health, one of the most competitive sections as well as best in fair etc at state. Does something like that mean nothing to them? Is it because I am a over represented asian (ugh).

on top of that, both my parents went there, so it comes as quite a surprise to be waitlist. Because of this, I doubt my chances at ivies.

I just had to post this about JHU.
I had originally intended on applying there and sent them my app from common app and then decided against it and didn't send recs/transcript/supplement/money/scores.

I got an email friday night. Rejected! haha
