tufts syndrome?

4.0, 2300+, decent EC's, accepted to Caltech and Duke so far.

but for JHU: no interview (had no clue i needed to sign up for one), the most crappy generalized "why us" essay, and submitted app jan 1st. result: WAITLISTED:(

tufts syndrome?

or just me being really petty and bitter?

the probability of your application falling into the circle on the table is equal to that of all of the other applications.

ha… i didn’t even know jhu did interviews… :P

nah, you’re not being petty, it’s just… unfair… :(

but bitter, yeah. Caltech and Duke are GREAT schools! be happy you got in there!

You had the numbers but nothing made you exceptional in the JHU pool. You were exceptional in the Duke and CalTech pools which is great = you have two fantastic options.

All schools are looking for different things.

GL

you’re being petty and bitter.

Good stats is only half of the picture. Plenty of kids with 2400s and perfect GPA’s get in. BUt what they also had was leadership positions and great essays. Don’t blame the school, please, if you didn’t come off as well as another student might’ve.

I’d think you were waitlisted because of the essay :-(

im insanely jealous…

ill probably get some angry responses from ppl but id trade my jhu acceptance with your duke acceptance… i got rejected :frowning: it was my second choice school

“the most crappy generalized “why us” essay”

JHU is ranked 15th in the country - this won’t cut it

i have no idea how i got in and you didnt! my gpa is good, and i have lots of leadership/community service, but my SAT scores didnt even meet the scale, no sports/music, only 1 rec, one recycled essay and one essay i wrote the day it was due. i love jhu but procrastination got in the way. then again i work well under pressure. i didnt even know you can interview…well congrats to everyone that did get in!

The OP pretty much admitted that she treated the JHU app with less care than her others. I’m not sure why she’s surprised by the result unless she thinks the admissions staff isn’t very perceptive. I’ll bet that they can spot an app in seconds where the student really doesn’t have much commitment to the school and the application process. It’s definitely not just about the numbers.

hannahmontana: Caltech and Duke are great schools!
When DS1 was accepted to JHU in 2006 I noticed a number of students with stats like yours who were rejected and there was a common theme: they admitted they “blew off” the JHU supplemental essay. At the JHU info session I attended the adcom member emphasized they read carefully every essay and its an important part of the process. Interviews are completely unnecessary (just held to answer prospective students questions).

i have similar stats: 4.0, 2340, 36 act, excellent ec’s, leadership, and recs, and was also waitlisted, even though I have gotten into BC honors program and dartmouth with a likely already. Although I actually spent alot of time on my “why us” essay and requested an interview. Sometimes things just don’t work out the way you expect. Just be happy about caltech and duke, those are great schools where i’m sure you can thrive

probably the essay…

thanks guys, your responses me feel better in an odd sort of way. and yeah, i am really ecstatic about caltech and duke. even getting into hopkins wouldn’t have made me want to go there more than either of those schools, but i just wanted to get in, lol. which is probably why i didn’t.

i’m not like indignant or angry at being waitlisted. i certainly don’t feel i “deserved” to get in based on “merit” alone. i do realize a thoughtless application should hurt me.

i was just a little sad when i didn’t get in because i suddenly got hyper-paranoid that the reason for it was because i “just wasn’t good enough”.

but instead, from what everyone says, it seems to be not an issue of “this applicant wasn’t good enough” but rather “this applicant wasn’t sincere enough”. haha i certainly hope so.

i now recall that jhu accepts the majority of its class ED right? perhaps they don’t necessarily have tufts syndrome, but something of the sort. they’re not just going to throw acceptances at people for having the stats/EC’s/decent essays to get in, unlike schools like uchicago that don’t care about their yield. they want kids who are just as much in love with hopkins as hopkins would like to have them.

anyway, thanks everyone. good luck with the rest of your decisions!!=)

i dont think jhu has a why us essay?

^it’s more of a why this major and why at jhu specifically. the wording of the prompt may be different, but it is essentially a “why us” essay.

^I just wanted to put in my two cents and say that my supplemental essay had nothing to do with hopkins at all, just why I wanted to pursue BME, and it worked out just fine for me.

I also think that jhu doesn’t have tuft’s syndrome–I have pretty similar statistics as you, go to a very prestigious school, and boatloads of ECs. Well I don’t think you’re being exorbitantly bitter and petty, I’d say you come off as such at least a bit. Completely rational though, I’m a bit ticked at a different school that waitlisted me.

No worries though, you have Duke and Caltech on your side–congrats right there!

JHU doesn’t have any Tufts syndrome. The admissions people are trying to get the most enthusiastics student body they can get to continue to improve the student life and student body quality that has progressed much in the past few years. They don’t want just regular students who might not appreciate Hopkins for all of its quirks and advantages. They want people who will truly be happy to be there.

What is Tufts syndrome?

My friend was wait listed at Hopkins. He got into MIT.
I was waitlisted by MIT but I got into my second choice school; Hopkins.

I think they are looking for two different types of individuals really. It varies a lot school to school.

Damn you dean admissions of MIT! (she was fired because she lied on her resume, she doesn’t have a college education, but she is a dean of admissions at MIT!)
