Good luck everyone! I can imagine I’ll be feeling how you guys do right now a month and a little from now.

Ahh why so tense? Just chill. We’ve done everything we can. It’s outside our control now. No use worrying about things outside of our control. Whatever happens will happen for the best

A note: My GPA is rather low, but I go to a rather competitive school (NYT a few years ago ranked us in the top ten best private schools in getting kids into Ivy League schools) and math does bring it down quite a bit.

SAT II: Lit 680 USH 750

Essays:
Why Tufts – Tour guide told a story about an interdisciplinary aid project engineered by students. Thus, main answer was Tufts’ ‘altruistic interdisciplinary approach to academics’
1st Optional – Why I love coffee. An analysis of the evolution of the drink itself and the influence of coffee shops on Western thought. Why the drink of coffee and the coffee shop actually provides the best atmosphere for learning.
2nd Optional – My mother is Catholic and my father is Jewish. That juxtaposition and how it’s affected my philosophical outlook on life and religion. How I’d pursue a sort of existentialist Judaism at Tufts Hillel
Long – An exploratory essay on the roots of Occupy Together and what it means for the institution of education. Main thesis was two part: 1) The American dream, go to college and be guaranteed a better life than the kid who stayed home, has failed. 2) That economic understanding of education is flawed
I argued (more a leitmotif) in all my essays that intellectual capability cannot is actually WORST measured by standardized tests

ECs: 1) Model UN 4 yr member, President senior year. Never failed to win an award at any conference. 7 “Best Delegates” 2) Independent area high school newspaper columnist and Director of Business and Advertising 3) XC 4 yrs, Varsity 3 yrs, Co-Captain senior year. 4) Golf team 4 yrs, Varsity 4 yrs, Captain junior and senior year 5) School Young Democrats Association, member 3 yrs, President senior year 6) Intraschool debate society member 3 yrs 7) Debate Team, Founder and President 2 yrs 8) Gay-Straight Alliance, member 4 yrs
I’m also a “member” of other clubs, but I’m not very active in them.

Community Service: 1) Youth Leadership Foundation, Administrative Assistant and tutoring inner city kids 2) Alexandria Arlington Coalition for the Homeless, Outreach Team member. Started both of these this past summer

Hook: Nothing really. The average Tufts applicant who wants to study IR

Location: Mid-Atlantic USA

School Type: Small, private.

Ethnicity: I really don’t think anyone should focus on this or gender in the application process.

Teacher Recs: They were probably amazing. 1 from the Chair of my school’s English Department and 1 from the Chair Emeritus of my school’s History Department. Both are well regarded outside my school for being really good teachers.

Counselor Rec: Definitely pretty average. I didn’t know, nor did I really like, my counselor.

Courses: While I may not attach AP to a course, you can assume that the course was taught at least at college level. Senior Year – Writing Politics (what it sounds like), Statistics, European History, Encountering God (theology), highest level of French. Junior Year – 1st Semester: Human Geography, Precalculus, Crossroads in American Identity (English course on the “American Dream”), US History, second highest level of French. Second Semester: English changes to American Literary Traditions and add Microeconomics

Strengths: My essays, extracurriculars and recs
Weaknesses: GPA and SAT score

Yes, my scores are quite low. My essays, however, were probably quite good. I feel awful for you guys who didn’t get in, and congratulations to the people who I’ll be seeing next fall!

Teacher Recs: I got one from my English teacher who was an alum of Tufts

State or Country: New York
School Type: Public HS
Ethnicity: White (Jewish, but that isn’t an ethnicity)
Gender: Male
Other Factors: I did the first optional supplemental essay
General Comments: Pretty ecstatic right now

Goodfit…Athletics are not big at Tufts at all except for the students that play and their parents who are usually the only ones in the stands watching the games. NESCAC is a very competitive conference but it is the education that your D will receive (if she takes advantage of it) which is the most important thing she will leave Tufts with. I hope she takes full advantage of all that the school has to offer her.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): didn’t send!
[] ACT: 33. 35 M, 32 R, 32 E, 31 S, 11 Essay
[] SAT Subject Tests: DIDN’T SEND!
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.70

[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Calc AB 4, English Lit 5, US history 4
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): didn’t send/show them.
[] Senior Year Course Load: A mix of IB/AP classes. so I’m taking (as a senior) 7 academic courses, only one is honors (physics)
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NONE!

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): SGA officer, NHS, School Newspaper Editor, Lots of local volunteering/work with kids. I spend 3 days a week mentoring/volunteering at two local elementary schools.
[] Job/Work Experience: sleepaway camp counselor for two months.
[] Volunteer/Community service: A lot scattered in the activities I do. Over 500 hours.
[] Summer Activities: Camp Counselor (after jr yr), Tufts Summit Program in the French alps @ Tufts Euro Center in France (after soph yr). Lots of various volunteering things in the past.
[] Essays: took a creative/fun approach with all of them. My why tufts highlighted how I clicked with the people/the campus. My optional was absolutely ridiculous/awesome. I wrote my 3rd supplement essay about lettuce.
[] Teacher Recommendation 1: History Teacher
[] Teacher Recommendation 2: Chem teacher! (and a third from my Calc Teacher)
[] Counselor Rec: I love him! And we have a fairly great relationship even though he has at least 100 students, and at least 40 seniors to write for.
[] Additional Rec: none.
[] Interview: Yes! So much fun. I was extremely enthusiastic and it was actually fairly short for an interview! The second half was reserved for questions…and since I’ve been on two tours at Tufts, gone to 6 info sessions in my area, and have talked to several students extensively about tufts, I really didn’t have much to ask her. She graduated a while back, so it was hard for her to relate to campus life now since things have changed. Seems to me that interviews are only important for Tufts if you haven’t really demonstrated much interest in the school in your app and want to learn more, or prove to them why you’ve applied.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): mid-atlantic region
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity:White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: average, applied for finaid.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): NONE!! White Jewish girl. NO legacy.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I put a lot of voice into my essays. I volunteer a lot. I love people.
[] Weaknesses: The typical CC reader would probably say my test scores/GPA. but those didn’t keep me from being accepted!
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I demonstrated a ton of interest in Tufts. I knew it was the right fit, so I put a LOT of effort into my entire application. I made an effort to get acquainted with the school, and I made my optimistic and interesting personality stand out in my essays I guess?
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted to Tulane? But no intention of attending…found out decision a month before Tufts, and it was a rolling decision (safety). [/li][/ul]General Comments: So freakin’ happy. I’ve wanted to be a part of Tufts since my sophomore year. Everyone seems amazing. I am going to learn so much and have the time of my life! Good luck to all EDII’s and RD students. Don’t let scary posts get your hopes down. Just work hard.

[] SAT IIs: 730 Math II, 700 Lit
[] GPA: Technically around a 3.4, but our school does not officially report GPAs.
[] Rank: Unranked
[] Other stats: 3 on WHAP, 4 on APUSH, currently in BC Calc and Adv Bio (no ap at my school)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Very sincere and specific. My common app was more of a writing piece, but my supplements had a lot of information about who I am.
[] ECs: Leader of Math League, Drama Club, and senior representative at my school. I’m really involved in every aspect of the performing arts department at my school. I’m in all the shows, choruses, and I’m a frequent singer for the instrumental groups.
[] Teacher Recs: Although I couldn’t read them, I think they were good. I had a very good relationship with both of my teachers.
[] Counselor Rec: I think it was really good, my counselor and I have gotten along extremely well.
[] Hook (if any): Nada.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: NY
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[/ul]**Other Factors:**I did the optional essay about taking a person from the human narrative and putting them in modern times.
General Comments: I know that this is a bit late to post, but I wanted to get it out there for any future applicants applying to tufts. I really had doubts about whether I was going to get in because of my GPA, I’ve never had perfect grades but I took the most challenging classes I could and managed to get the best grades I’ve ever gotten during my senior year, though still not perfect. If you’re working hard, I promise it’ll show through.
