Tufts University Class of 2021 RD Discussion Thread

Hey yall! I’m new to this thread  I am so in love with Tufts it’s not even funny. I missed the interview deadline tho yikes. I could talk about Tufts for hours tho. April first can’t come soon enough

@binky17 Sorry for the late reply. I think it’s possible to show sufficient interest in the essays alone. There was a certain quirkiness about Tufts that appealed to him, and I think he reflected it back in this essays. Of course, there’s the tendency to think that EVERYTHING was right when you are accepted, and EVERYTHING was dreadful when you’re deferred or rejected, so one never knows. But I do think, from reading a lot of Tufts materials, that he had a sense of the school that resonated in his application.

Very best of luck to your son. It’s a nice place, and I really, really think they’re being truthful when they say they don’t care about the interview. (Hope my D gets in too.)

@Wizardingage thank you for your reply. Let’s hope so! And good luck to your daughter.

@binky17 : I would recommend that he write to the admissions office and let them know he visited and loved it, though he visited when the admissions office was closed. That way, interest has been demonstrated! I know top students who were rejected from Tufts in the past few years while accepted at Ivies and other top schools. The students’ inference, while perhaps incorrect, was that they were rejected due to insufficient expressed interest. After all, people call the practice of rejecting students who might be using a school as their safety “Tufts syndrome”! These days, of course, Tufts is the top choice for many top students, and is so competitive to get into that no one could ever consider it a safety.
Best of luck.

@TheGreyKing good advice, thank you! I will tell him to email, but my son always thinks he runs the risk of annoying people. But you have to show the love a little bit.

@binky17 I would tend to agree with your son about annoying adcoms. This late in the application season, there’s really nothing you can do about it. Emailing the adcoms and telling them you visited won’t change a rejection/deferral into an acceptance if they’re on the fence about an application. Like Wizardingage said, it’s entirely possible to show that you’re really interested in Tufts just from the essay alone, since that’s one of the reasons why they offer supplementals–to get to know you better and to help you get to know the school better.

Just got invited for a Tufts interview! Didn’t expect it, as I have a massive time difference with the US and there aren’t any alumni in my area.

@binky17 Can I add— I do like the short email declaring first choice (if it is). Having spent a few (very happy) years around that school, I think they will welcome a short letter or email with carefully chosen words.

At my son’s induction ceremony, they called up one of the new freshmen to return a shoe to her. Apparently, she had sent the mate to the admissions office with a note, “now that I’ve got one foot in the door, you may as well admit me.” I’m serious. Adorable, and I wouldn’t dare personally… but that gives you a sense of their general lightheartedness. Somehow that bunch manages not to let their humor get crushed by the crush. Crossing fingers that your son and my daughter get good news!

That’s hilarious @Wizardingage ! So sweet. Unfortunately, he is reluctant to email so close to decision, which is too bad because he has a pretty significant update he could include. He thinks less is more. I disagree. We shall see soon enough. My tongue can’t take much more of the biting, but it’s his college process. Eh.

I cannot see him mailing a shoe in a million years! For one thing, he is a size 14 1/2. And, secondly, I am not sure he knows where the post office is.

Please let me know if she gets in…how nice it would be to have the sibs together.

Hello @binky17! I got deferred from ed and I sent in my mid-year update and I got a very sweet email from my admissions councilor this afternoon how my email gives good context on my struggles in one of my classes! So they definitely read them! Honestly I would sent it today they might take a couple days to get back to you but you can tell they have read the email and keep it in mind for the decisions.

@kwnstandina thank you, I will tell him this^ and see if he budges.

That’s funny. Yup. they get to call the shots. (and that size 14 1/2 probably happened pretty quickly!) But did he run his decision not to send the significant update by his college counselor? (and re biting tongues, can you imagine “shoe- mother’s” reaction to: “why are you hobbling around on one sandal, hon?”… “thought I’d send the other on over to Tufts Admissions…”
Good luck!!

@Wizardingage no, he didn’t ask for advice because he just has an old-fashioned guidance counselor who knows less than we do about this process. We’re from an under-resourced area, for sure. Maybe I will ask him to reconsider one more time.

Here’s to a Tufts Cinderella story for all. May the slipper fit!

Does anyone know what day decisions were released last year?

@lucky0318 It was the 31st, so I’m guessing (keeping the same day of the week pattern) that it will be the 30th this year!

Ivy release day is the 30th, so I really hope they don’t do that because I’m going to be so stressed on that day lol

Last year they released on IVY Day. And the release was by time zone, beginning in the afternoon in the East and working their way West.

I am so nervous! Haha I want to be a biology major with a pre-dental track. Is anybody else on here interested in premed or predental? Or love Greys anatomy haha

@kwnstandina Interested in pre med … Also really love Grey’s anatomy … I’m an international student… Applied RD…
