I'm thinking about applying to Tufts University year and was wondering what others think my chances might be. I do not really have a full transcript so I am looking for more of a rough, tentative evaulation.

GPA: Not computed yet but probably in the 3.5-3.8 range

Class Rank: Not determined but probably top 10%, maybe top 5%

SAT score: Haven't gotten results but I'm expecting 2250-2350. I'm taking it again unless I get above 2350 because I might as well if there's a chance of improving.

Activities:

Varsity Track/XC year round, I won a few regional level awards and might be useful to Tufts' (admittedly mediocre) team, but I'm not that big on sports and neither is Tufts as far as I know.

I also write for the school newspaper, am in a student human rights group, and have won regional level awards in Science Olympiad.

I am not worried much about the essays because formal writing is one of my stronger points, but Tufts has high admission standards and my GPA is not all too spectacular to say the least.

My school counts honors courses as 1.05 and AP courses as 1.08, and all of my non-electives have been honors or AP. This should make my weighted GPA more like 3.8-3.9 now that I think of it, but I have no way to be certain yet.

I think you have a good shot, especially if you’re going to get your SAT scores that high. So far I know two girls from my school who have gotten into Tufts, both I think in top 10% but neither with such strong SAT scores. One is also student council president and the other is a trackie. Two other people are being recruited for track, also probably in top 10% but with scores below 2200.

I just gave you a pretty comprehensive answer to this question, based on my own child’s recent acceptance, which posted under your other thread–GPA and Admissions. Hope it helps!

Grape, as I mentioned in the other thread, your numbers are easily good enough to get you considered. However, the admissions process is not a game of who has the highest numbers. Kids with lower test scores and GPA than yours have been accepted, and kids with higher test scores and GPAs have been denied. Your numbers will get you considered. Your essays and recs will get you admitted. If I were you, I’d stop stressing about how my numbers compared to admitted students’ averages, and spend that time writing the sharpest, most expressive essay I possibly could, and cultivating relationships with teachers who could write me stellar recommendations.

I agree with everything Snarf said, if your GPA/SATs end up as high as you say they will, then really get into the rest of the application. Going from a 2320 to a 2350 isn’t what will get you in, but a beaming teacher rec and clever essays can do wonders!

Thanks for the advice, especially from Snarf. I did not mean to post two nealry identical threads but I put this one under the Admissions part of the board and then it got moved. My concern (as I ought to have stated) was that I was planning on applying ED1 and I did not want to waste my one ED1 application on a school I did not have a strong chance of being considered for. As you said, the numbers get you considered and the soft aspects of the application get you accepted. If I didn’t have to numbers, something I was unsure about, than the other parts of the application wouldn’t matter. That being said, if my GPA and test scores are good enough to get my considered than it’s not so much of an issue.

How important are SAT II scores? I got a 790 on the World History test and I’m taking the Biology E and American History in June (I have well over a 4.0 in US History and medaled at SO regions in Ecology so these scores will hopefully be similar). Tufts asks for two, should I submit the only best two or all three?

Private message Dan@Admiss, he’d be able to say with certainty (though may not be allowed to say) how important the SAT IIs are. It seems to me that demonstrating strong competence in your fields of interest could only help you.

If you get similar scores on the other two SAT IIs, they should not be anything to worry about. I did not have higher than 710 on a single SAT II and got in. With regards to which you should send, I would say sending them all likely can’t hurt you. I sent a 710, 700, 690, 680, and a 620. (620 was in Bio, I just sent it to demonstrate interest because that’s what I chose as a likely major/area of study on my common app).
