Tufts v. NYU

Which one would you choose?

my top 3 schools are: nyu, gwu, and tufts. i've only been accepted to nyu, but if i get into one or both of the others, then i don't know how i'm going to pick. :X

well, it depends what you want to do/ what u wanna major in. tufts has a better ranking than nyu (it's 27th to be more exact) and i'm guessing it has fewer students (in the 5000s i think). nyu has the "downtown" advantage, but gives terrible financial aid packages (if you're accepted ED). if i were you, i would consider financial aid and majors it offers. + campus vs. no campus.

have you visited either? because the atmospheres are very, very different.

Tufts. A better school. NYU is trendy right now.

Screw the US news rankings, they are just a bunch of BS.
Im more interested in the atmosphere, the types of people going to the schools, and if you can have a good experiece.

well, i guess nyu is the place where you have a chance to meet all sorts of ppl: boring, enterntaining, conservative/ liberals, artists/ entrepreneurs, selfish/selfless... nyu = nyc! the experience must be great!

but seen from a different angle, the school is what u make of it. you will be the one to shape the experience there. tough decision, though!

The main difference between Tufts and NYU is the location. They are both equal to each other in terms of the level of academic quality/rigour. Tufts obviously has a campus with a big grassy lawn and all of that... it is beautiful and very close to Boston so it's not like you would be attending school in the middle of nowhere. NYU clearly is right in the middle of Manhattan so your campus is New York City. Tufts and NYU both are relatively stingy with financial aid so I doubt their offers would be vastly different. You would have to visit the two schools before making a decision.

i feel like tufts would be better with financial aid than NYU is. it'd also be more costly to live in new york. tufts is a smaller school, more liberal arts than big university and it also has an actual campus. i personally would lean towards NYU though, after growing up in a small town.

from what i have heard tufts is much more academically rigorous than nyu
but besides that factor i think a lot of it is personal choice because of the differences in campus, student body, etc..

Tufts, for academic quality and reputation, and quality of students.

NYU
SAT Critical Reading: 600 - 700
SAT Math: 610 - 710
SAT Writing: 600 - 700
67% in top 10th of graduating class
36% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
Total undergrads: 20,965
First-time degree-seeking freshmen: 4,740

Tufts
SAT Critical Reading: 670 - 740
SAT Math: 670 - 740
SAT Writing: 660 - 740
83% in top 10th of graduating class
Total undergrads: 4,995
First-time degree-seeking freshmen: 1,281

NYU for location, academic quality, student body diversity, and tendency to place its students into its top graduate/prof programs.

tufts for the 'real college experience.'
academically its not even close.

huskem55 - when you say academically it's not even close do you mean it is significantly better or worse? I've researched both schools extensively and spent a lot of time on the tufts campus (I participated in a college prep program sort of thing there one summer) and academically I would say they are equal

Mallomar those figures are outdated. princetonreview and collegeboard have figures from like 2002 for some reason, NYU's stats have sky rocketed the last few years and alot of ranking sites never bothered to update.

Matt, how are those outdated if they take into account SAT Writing scores? Lol. Nice job there.
Collegeboard has updated score ranges; the ones posted now are different from those posted at the beginning of this school year.

Just one observation: With NYU being so big and so lacking a campus, it's not for everyone. There are people who would do better at a smaller college, one with a campus. Some folks will get lost at NYU. (I would have been one of them, in the olden days.)

sorry, just personal opinion that nyu is extremely overrated academically while tufts is underrated.

huskem: ok! there's another thread on that underrated/overrated business. it's called "Why is NYU the #1 school that high school students want to attend?" and if you start that discussion all over again, trust me!! you'll be confronted w/ really angry prospective nyu students. lol. (i was one of them for some time ashamed). I'm just warning you!

well i was asked why i thought nyu was 'not even close,' so i gave my response! i warned you it was personal opinion...
