Tufts vs. Rice

I'm a likely science major deciding between Rice and Tufts. Have seen both campuses, familiar with weather in Boston & in Houston, but undecided between the 2 schools. Is Rice clearly the better choice?

hmm what sort of science are you considering?

neuroscience, biochem

As a Tufts student from Houston, I feel I'm qualified to assist you. Tufts and Rice both have very good premed and biochem programs, and no matter which you attend, you'll have to do a lot of work, but you probably already knew that. Rice might be better for you due to its proximity to the Medical Center, but Tufts is, at least in my opinion, a more fun place to go to school. Also remember that although the two school attract similar types of students, Houston is hot while Boston is cold, Rice is flat while Tufts is on a hill, and the former is better known in the south and midwest while the latter is better known up north. Houston is cheaper while Boston has more stuff for students to do.

Thanks wrathofachilles - have visited both campuses, Boston last spring in miserable weather and Rice just recently and liked both. Does Rice have a better support system? Are you getting good advising at Tufts? What is your major? What is your dorm like? Are there lots of bicycles on campus or is it too hilly for that? Do you venture into Boston often? Some books describe Tufts as "spiritless" but you say it is more fun than Houston???

go to tufts

Advising at Tufts is great once you find an advisor in your field. I'm majoring in International Relations (IR). My dorm has nice big rooms(for a dorm that is), but it's not that clean (however that's true of many university dorms). You'll see a bike on campus from time to time but they;re not that common. I go to Boston every 2 weeks or so. I don't think Tufts is spiritless at all. No, it's definately not a party school, but if that's what you want go to a state school: it's cheaper and the parties are better.

If by "spiritless" you mean "bitter ivy league rejects," well there is still a little bit of truth to that stereotype. A few people will be like that when you first get to tufts, but most of them will have moved on after the first 2 or 3 months of freshman year. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the same is true at Rice.
