I'm becoming very interested in Tufts. I live in California, and I've never been to Boston. Can anyone share any likes/dislikes regarding the school and or the city? Thanks!

I'm local to Boston area - Boston and Cambridge are great towns for college students. Moderately sized city, with lots of student focused activities, because there are many schools in the area. (BU, BC, Northeastern, MIT, Emerson, Harvard all within a few stops of the subway of one another, and some within walking distance). There are many more than those.

Tufts is just outside of Cambridge. You can catch a bus to subway/Cambridge, and easily get to all that the city has to offer. Tufts itself is an area that is urban residential. Nice campus on a hill, great vibe.

My D. visited the school, liked the energy and thought people were engaged and mellow, if that makes any sense.

Downside of the area - you are in a city, there can be crime. It's New England (brrrrrrrrr).

Browse through some of the posts on the Tufts section here at CC to get a flavor of the place.

I'm a Tufts grad who now lives in California. I was from a warm place (not Cali, somewhere abroad) and Boston was, to say the least, very different from what I was used to. But I loved it because of how young the city is (1 in 3 is a college student!) .. though the best part of my four years in Beantown was certainly Tufts ;)

I attended undergrad a few miles away; now I live a couple of blocks from Tufts and am trying to get into one of their post-bac programs.

Pros:

Fantastic international relations program, study abroad programs

Good academic rep

The Davis Square neighborhood is really, really nice (if you're liberal, it's quite a liberal area)

Lots to do around metro Boston, for all types - the jocks, the geeks, the clubbers, the goths, something for everyone

Easily accessible public transportation, things are close together anyway

Better town-gown relations than most Boston-area universities seem to have

Cons:

The long winters suck. It's not even that the winters are so cold - many places in the US have colder - it's that they last forever.

If you're from a low-humidity place, you might be taken aback by the humidity in the summer. Some of my friends from out West were. I'm from the South, so I laughed at them.

The cost of living is stupidly high. Compared to California it may not be as bad, as I've heard that this is true out there too.

Thanks for the feedback! Boston sounds like such a nice city, I would really like to visit. Except for the cold weather at least... haha. Lolabelle, can you tell me more about what you liked about Tufts?

I think I absolutely love the school. You should ask this question on the Tufts forum you'll get lots of replies.

Thanks, I'll do that.
