Tuition and Scholarships

The boarding school I am interested in has a final tuition price of $46,000. My family makes about $200,000 a year, but my parents aren't willing to pay. I try to convince them that the cost of boarding school is around the same cost of me living at home + my private school tuition. I am currently applying to a scholarship essay contest that, if won, will earn me $5,000. What other scholarships can I apply for? I am an asian (so I can't apply for A Better Chance) 8th grader who lives in the Northwest.

Good for you for trying to find a way to do this yourself! Unfortunately, the only scholarship program I’m aware of (and it does pay for all four years of school!) is one that you have to apply for in 7th grade (the Susan D. Bradley Scholarship) . . . so that doesn’t help you much.

However, there are several schools that offer their own merit-based scholarships. They probably wouldn’t cover the full cost of tuition, but it’s a start. To find these, though, you really have to go school by school. If you go to [Boarding School Review](Boarding School Search Tool), you can do a search specifically for schools offering merit scholarships. (The link I’ve given you takes you directly to the search page, if you scan through the various criteria, you’ll find “merit scholarships.”) It’s actually a surprisingly long list!

The other thing I’d suggest is encouraging your parents to visit this forum. Suggest that they post their concerns over in the “Parents” section of the forum. Their question (why they’d want to pay for boarding school when there’s a perfectly good private school nearby) is one that boarding school parents hear all the time! So maybe we’d have some good answers for them.

You can also find out if there are any school fairs scheduled for where you live. Perhaps if your parents get a chance to meet some of the reps from the different schools, it would change their perspective on things.

Good luck!

Families w incomes over 300k/year can still qualify for FA at many BS. I would check directly with each BS you are interested in.
