DS was accepted to LAH. He is an in state student. They offered 8000 in scholarships/funding. The remaining left to pay either on his own or EFC is over 17,000. Does this seem high? From everything I have looked at on their cost page it seems to be more comparable to OOS. Anyone else in state get these numbers?

Did he put San Jac or Duren as his housing preferences? The financial aid page has an estimated total cost of attendance. First: make sure that his language arts honors scholarship appears under the “total resources” marker in his financial aid notification.

Second: look at housing costs. Tuition is definitely correct, but how much did u expect to pay for housing? Remember San jac and Duren are 3000 more dollars

Last year my DD’s COA was about $ 25,000, including tuition, books, housing, transportation and living expenses.

From our experience if you don’t live in San Jac or Duren and chose a more “affordable” housing option, buy used books, don’t keep a car on campus, and don’t pay for gas, insurance and very expensive parking (buses for students are free and public transportation is excellent), don’t buy medical insurance from UT, don’t join sororities/fraternities and don’t go to expensive entertainment every weekend (UT provides a lot of concerts, movies and other activities for free on campus) expenses will go down to about $ 20,000 -21,000

Thanks. He decided to go with Chicago. After seeing that we would be paying 17000 a year at UT and 20000 at Chicago he opted to go with them. Thanks for the info, it does make me feel a bit better to know that we aren’t loosing a ton of money by choosing out of state.

YA YA,

Can you recommend an affordable housing option? My OOS daughter will be a Fall 2013 Freshmen. We are at a loss how to locate affordable housing. Also, do you have any information on how she might find employment?

employment on campus [Hire a Longhorn](http://hirealonghorn.org/)
This is just regular student jobs.

There are also various opportunities to work as Resident assistant, Research assistant, all kind of mentors etc, these positions are not on this site, students usually get email from related department, academic advisor or career services. They can also check facebook pages or webpages of related departments

Also, go to facebook and check facebook group University of Texas at Austin Class 2016. A lot of freshmen are moving from dorms to apartments next year and are currently looking for roommates.

Muse3,
My D has worked two or three late afternoons all four years as a nanny for a family that lives close to campus. She drives to afterschool activities or helps with homework. She gets paid very well. Your D would probably need a car for this.

D is an engineering major and has excellent internships each summer which have paid moving costs and housing. Some students make as much as $20,000 a summer. (One of D’s friends made $38/hour last summer. She was geoscience major.) Many of them (D included) get these positions through the co-op fair which is held in the fall and spring. I’m sorry that I don’t know as much about the other colleges.

YAYA,
