In general, how much is the tuition fee for an international student who is willing apply to a grad school in the State?

depends on the school. if it is a private school, odds are the tuition will be the same for domestic and international students, and that can be anywhere from 25-50K a year depending on the school. public schools will have lower tuition for domestic students, and state schools will have even lower tuition for in-state residents. some schools, like UCLA (and other schools in the UC system, i believe), let you claim california residency after 12 months, regardless of where you’re from originally, so that after the first year you’re paying significantly less in tuition.

however, most PhD programs will fund the majority of their admitted students (top schools fund every admit, usually). your tuition is covered, your health insurance is usually covered, and you get a monthly stipend either from working as a teaching assistant, research assistant, or simply being on a fellowship. so, weirdly, the higher you reach, the greater your odds of not having to pay at all.

masters programs don’t usually fund students at all, though. if you’re sure you want a PhD, apply directly to those programs to avoid the tuition problem altogether.
