Tuition freeze--sort of

Good news for prospective students, and I hope for current freshman and sophomores. President McRobbie gave his state of IU speech yesterday.

He announced a new initiative that will freeze tuition after one's sophomore year. If a student is making adequate progress towards graduating in 4 years, at the end of sophomore year, tuition will not be increased before graduating.

He will also be asking the Board of Trustees to keep any tuition hikes in the next budget to a minimum.

For the full speech, go here:

I also want to add one bit of info for prospective students. IU creates a new budget every two years as that is how often the state budget is created. The next new budget will be developed in 2013 so tuition for 2013 will not be known until that is complete. IU cannot complete it's budget until the state budget is completed. A few years ago the state was "late" with budget completion so IU tuition rates were not set until late June/July.

Indiana will have a new governor next year. Who knows how that will impact the IU budget, but the state, like most states, has been decreasing funding for higher education.

Thanks so much for the info, especially helpful for us OOS folks who are not familiar with IU or Indiana’s budget.
