Something near and dear to my heart.

The April meeting of the Board of Visitors last week is traditionally the meeting where the BOV approves the annual increases in room & board & tuition.

Room & board is supposed to go up by nearly 10% (which also means off-Grounds apt rent will increase by the same).

Tuition was supposed to go up by over 10% but the stimulus package might temper the increase. Has anyone seen anything?

At the Days on the Lawn event on Saturday, the Financial Aid person said that the costs for 2009-2010 would be posted this week. She said for planning persons it might be good to use unofficial estimates of $23K and $43K as total cost of attendance.

I saw today that the BOV will have a special session on the 14th to officially determine 2009-2010 rates. Decisions have been delayed since the state hasn’t given final funding numbers yet.

Don’t assume this is necessarily true. In fact at the moment it seems many places that are normally sold out around this time of year still have vacancies for instance.

From the UVA web site:

2009-2010

At this time, the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia has not considered 2009-10 tuition and mandatory fees. For planning purposes, we recommend that you assume that the cost of attending the University in 2009-10 as a full-time undergraduate will be approximately $21,434 for in-state undergraduates and $42,680 for out-of-state undergraduates. This cost of attendance includes estimated tuition, mandatory fees, room, board, books, travel and personal expenses. As soon as the Board of Visitors approves the 2009-10 tuition and fees that information will be posted.

That would be only a 6.2% and 5.5% increase, respectively, which would be lower than recent years. Still a hit, though, if your income is flat.

Released today – increases per Finance Committee of BOV – tuition, fees, housing and dining for 2009-2010 will go up about 4.5% on average for instate, up 6.6% for out-of-state.

For IS, these costs for the upcoming year are about $200 lower than projected in the 2007 Six-Year Plan. For OOS, about $550 higher. Much better than I expected.

Have the official numbers been posted to go along with whatever announcement was made yesterday (April 14) according to mechwahoo’s post? The web site still has unofficial numbers with the statement that the board hasn’t decided.
