Florida's 11 public universities would have the power to raise tuition rates, now among the nation's lowest, up to 15 percent a year until they reach the national average under a bill that cleared its first legislative hurdle Wednesday.

In-state undergraduate base tuition (not including local fees), as set by the Legislature, now is $2,461 for a full 30-credit year. If the bill becomes law it could more than double by 2013 to between $6,323 and $6,743 depending on the school, according to a Senate staff report.

The differential tuition would not be covered by the state's popular Bright Futures scholarships. They pay up to 100 percent of base tuition for students with high marks on entrance tests and in high school and college classes.

Florida</a> university tuition could rise from $82 to $211 per credit hour</p>

<p>Ugh. :(</p>

<p>The up-side is that finally Florida will fund our universities appropriately and we'll see a rise in quality. About time.</p>

<p>The state reduces college funding as the tuition differential continues to rise so I am not sure you will see any increase of anything except your bill. </p>

<p>By creating a tuition differential, the state is reducing its obligation to fund Bright Futures. They only cover regular tuition and some local fees, not tuition differential nor other fees the college tacks on.</p>

<p>Future Florida Prepaid Plan owners have to purchase tuition differential plan along with regular tuition, local fees and dorm to cover the increase too. If you purchased the Prepaid Plans prior to last year you are not subject to the tuition differential but you will pay some extra fees like transportation for example.</p>
