I’ve got a question and I’ve posed this situation to both the admissiobs and financial aid offices and recieved two completely different answers.

I have a scholarahip for full tuition (through ROTC) but since room and board is still a sizable $14000 I’m hoping to be able to add some institutional based merit or need based aid to cut that cost down (Ill likely just miss getting any federal help outta FAFSA. The website seems to suggest that ALL of the need based awards from the school and all of the merit based awards from the school MUST go towards tuition and cannot be used to help with room and board cost? Like I said I’ve gotten conflicting and vague answers from the school, please help!

I would try AU Central 202-885-8000. I am fairly certain that financial aid and merit aid can be used to pay any direct university charges included tuition & fees, housing and meal plans. AU Central should be able to confirm this.

Wait, you received no federal aid in your FA package? That’s weird.

I doubt you’d get any more financial aid than you received in your FA package already, but from my experiences as a student, you definitely can use merit or need based aid towards non-tuition expenses.

I have not yet been accepted (RD applicant) but I am confident in my chances. So I do not yet have my financial package. Maybe the issue here is that I am not entirely certain how federal aid works (not financially savvy and some unhelpful parents). The information from FAFSA/CSS I know is seen by the school, so that means they then take COA minus EFC and in theory that is the need based aid offer? (I know that in reality it doesn’t always line up like that). As long as my offer is somewhat close to that number AND that money can be used to cover room and board I’ll have a full ride and be the happiest guy on the planet!

@Libertador Hey IDK if you still check College Confidential, but I’m applying for the AROTC scholarship at American, and I’m wondering if you would be willing to share your stats. I’d love to know what stats got you the scholarship. Thanks and congrats on getting it!
