I heard that all OOS students pay instate tuition after the first year. Is this true? I'm extremely skeptical, and would love for some current students to set me straight. Thanks!

I’m almost positive that isn’t true.

Not true at all. The only OOS students that “pay” in-state tuition are those on full scholarships. I put pay in quotes because they don’t pay anything but are assessed internally at the in-state rates.

That’s definitely not true.

not true…

but you could perhaps get an apartment after first year and establish residency in NC…and pay in-state tuition junior/senior year??? not sure…

An a apartment or house will not establish residency,my son lived in the same house off campus for over two years.

In addition to other things you have to get a NC drivers license and register to vote in NC. You then also become eligible for NC income tax as well which in our case was not good for him. Texas has no state income tax and losing that status would have added NC state income taxes to his scholarship.

There are links on the UNC website that show what you need to do to establish yourself as instate.

it will be very tough to prove that you are in-state… trust me… they have domicile rules for that reason.
