We got something in the mail from DS's college to sign up for Tuition Reimbursement Insurance. If DS gets sick or injured and does not complete the semester, it will give us back 100% of his tuition and room fee (not board, though). Early in the semester the college would give back a percentage of the money and the Tuititon Reimbursement would make up the difference; near the end of the semester the TR would pay the whole thing.

It's $294 for the year (2 semesters). DS's college is $44,000/year, and he's getting no financial aid. I'm inclined to think this is a worthwhile investment. I've known 2 people who had to leave school mid-semester for health reasons, when they repeated the semester they ended up paying twice for one education.

Any opinions or experience with such a plan?

"I'm inclined to think this is a worthwhile investment."

I think you have your answer there. Cost for the insurance is neglible compared to tuition which suggests (a) it wouldn't be a financial burden; and (b) few people who purchase the insurance actually file a claim.

There are considerable numbers of health issues in college, so you may want to check what diseases are covered and what proof is needed in order to receive reimbursement.

We bought the insurance for both kids, and it was worth it, just for peace of mind. We never had to use it, thank goodness, but it was there just in case, considering that one of our kids could have a life-threatening situation due to a health issue (and the other kid rarely needs to see the doc).

We bought the insurance for our D's freshman year. Although accidents, injuries and illness can happen at any time, I was thinking that the stress of going to college, being away from home, college level work, could all add up to a major illness. After she adjusted just fine, we didn't purchase it for the other years.
