On the status check, the value of the full out of state tuition waiver is around 14,000. They just posted financial aid packages yesterday however, and there the amount is $11,000. Is this because freshmen are expected to take less credits and thus pay less in tuition?
Keep in mind that financial aid is not really ever final, and can (and will) likely change up until the very day that your financial aid is disbursed.
Same issue here. I left word with a counselor and will post further information shortly.
They advised that it is the amount of the acceptance page that prevails. Apparently they use a different number of credits with respect to the FA calculation to define full time student.
@Newtownunit So what does that mean? That if I take more credits I’ll have to pay the OOS cost per credit?
I can’t take it further than what I stated. Apparently, when FAFSA calculates full time status they use a certain number of credits, whereas FSU assumes you’ll do more than that per year.
Yes, for FAFSA full-time students are taking 12+ credits per semester. At FSU everything is calculated based off a 15 credit semester (30 credit year, hence 120 credits to graduate in 4 years). You can still take 12, 13, or 14 credits, but for things like Bright Futures your amount disbursed will be impacted (you’ll be shown an award for 30 credit hours worth of Bright Futures, but if you only enroll in 12 credits per semester you’ll get less of the BF money).
I just called FSU for the same issue as well as the fact that financial aid award acceptance was locked. Financial aid supervisor said that acceptance is locked right now as they reconfigure amounts for everyone, whatever that means. She transferred me for the out of state scholarship waiver question but I had to leave a message for whoever she transferred me to. Will let you know if and when I get a call back. I would assume if you take 15 credits, the amount will go up to the amount quoted? As long as we don’t pay more than in-state that is all that matters, right?
FSU Financial Aid is constantly changing things on their end (do not ask why). It happens for whatever reason that they have, I’m guessing it’s because they’re trying to do things for 40,000 students and they’re relatively understaffed.
The tuition waiver page says it assumes a 30 credit year, so I would expect that the waiver will be equal to however many credits you take, just like Bright Futures. Don’t really assume anything with financial aid: make sure you get an answer to your question.
I’ve caught them going back in and changing my FAFSA before to have incorrect information on it that would raise my EFC significantly. I can’t stress enough how much you need to get answers to questions from them. I’d honestly suggest recording conversations you have over the phone and DO NOT DELETE ANY EMAILS from them.
Careful there. If you live in PA for example, recording a call without the other party’s permission is a crime. But keeping a written record is important. It seems like the FA departments at all the schools my son is looking at are both understaffed and high disorganized. I think that’s a reflection of a pretty confusing financial aid program out there.
For those of you that received the OOS waiver - do they guarantee the OOS tuition waiver for 4 years or does it have any other stipulations on it for carrying over year after year?
what are your stats that you were elligible to a tuition waver? prospective student here and want to know my chances of getting the scholarship since it doesnt really say on the website
I think you need around a 30 for the full or 29 for the half @Undecided2020
