Let us celebrate! Who else got in?

I did! Are you definitely going to go or are you still considering other schools?

I got in! And am most likely defiantly going! Especially after the nice merit scholarship!

Yeah I will most likely be going too if I get enough need-based aid and/or athletic scholarship to cover the rest of the cost of attendance. I’ve already started looking at the different dorms. xD

I got in also w/ a scholarship, although I don’t think I’ll end up going. I already applied ED to another school. Nonetheless, I’m still extremely glad that I got in.

Ha! Me too! Right now I’m leaning towards Sharp… Which one is your favorite?

I was thinking Wall Residential College… The suites (4 people to a bathroom) are really a plus for me and the rooms look really big. My second choice would probably be Butler though.

I’m not sure if I’ll go…depends on aid from other schools but the $25000 is so awesome. Do you guys know if we can still apply to the DHs/Tulane award with a presidential scholarship?

Sent from my LG-VM696 using CC

Brookablook - most definitely. In fact almost every past winner of the DHS will have gotten the Presidential scholarship first, since only the most academically accomplished students are eligible for either. Some winners of the DHS will have won the Distinguished Scholar Award rather than the Presidential, but that would be comparatively exceptional.

Are you allowed to apply for the DHS if you did not receive any original scholarship or award? Like are there prerequisites that you must have academically or with your scores to apply for those kind of scholarships?

I may be confused, I don’t actually remember which award I received- it may have been the distinguished scholar award- the one that is $25,000 every year for four years. In that case, can I still apply for the DHS and/or Paul Tulane?

I’ll try to make sure I am being clear on this. Anyone can apply for the DHS and/or Paul Tulane Award, and yes you can apply for both at the same time. What is also true is that, for the DHS at least, they tell you as general guidelines that you should have graduated in the top 5% of your class (even if your school doesn’t rank it means you should have a very high GPA relative to most of the rest of your class, and the school relays this information to all universities, even if they do not make it available publicly), have taken a strong schedule of challenging courses, have SAT of 2250+ or ACT of 33+, and a positive record of EC’s/community service. [Deans Honor Scholarship](http://financialaid.tulane.edu/idxdean’s_honor_scholarship.htm) While that link doesn’t specify those test scores, I have seen that elsewhere and past winners have usually had those kinds of scores. It isn’t absolute, but it sure can’t be too far off from that either, for any of those criteria.

The Paul Tulane Award is new this year and they haven’t caught the web site up yet in terms of stating the criteria, given that it is a full tuition award there is no reason to believe that the standards would be any lower. Sure, now that there are 50 more full tuition awards compared to the last 3-4 years there might be a bit more leeway, and I am ABSOLUTELY NOT saying it is entirely stats based. The stats represent more of a minimum threshold that, in general, anywhere from many hundreds to a thousand or so meet. It is then the quality of the box project for the DHS or the essays for the PTA that differentiate the winners.

So meerkat. if you did not initially receive any merit scholarship, I would have to say the odds are exceedingly slim for getting one of these scholarships. I don’t see that you have posted your stats, so it is hard to be specific otherwise. I will send you a private message.

brookablook, you did receive the Distinguished Scholar Award which is $25,000 per year. The Presidential is $27,000. But you did get invited to the Honors Program as well, so you must have been towards the top end of the DSA group. All Presidential winners are invited to the HP, but not all DSA winners. Looking at your stats on the Chance Me thread you posted, I would advise you go for it! You must have been very close to winning the Presidential. I have to chuckle a little when someone says a 3.72 UW is a low GPA. I would have killed for that in high school. I don’t know how many AP courses your high school offers, I think taking a couple more might have made a bit of a difference. But no matter now, you have a very strong record and yours is the type of case where a great project (or great essays for the PTA) might just do it. It is all up to you if you have the time, energy and desire. Also, a couple years ago they did a few “Honorable Mention” type awards for the DHS where they winner got $28,000 but back then the Presidential was $25,000 and the DSA $22,000. So if they are still doing that, it might be $30,000 now. But now that they have the PTA, I do not know if they are still doing that or if they are even related in any way.

So I hope I have cleared up any confusion. Certainly feel free to ask further. Sometimes what I think is clear is actually mud.

DS was accepted. Founder’s Award ($22K/year). We are visiting at the end of November. DS waiting for other decisions/awards, but we are very excited to have an affordable Tulane as a possibility!

LINYMOM- what were your son’s stats? My child was accepted and we have not received our letter yet so I want to get a sense of what we may anticipate. Is it solely on ACT/SAT or in combo with grades? Are other factors considered such as EA/SCEA, EC or displayed interest?

It is largely stat driven, which means both test scores and GPA. Along with the GPA, strength of schedule is taken into account. Those that took a lot of AP courses (assuming of course that the school offers them) are rewarded for that. Applying early and showing interest certainly makes some difference also, the whole idea is to attract the best students possible to Tulane, with best meaning that demonstrated academic ability plays a dominant but not exclusive role in admissions and scholarships. In general Tulane certainly wants academically oriented people, but like all highly selective schools they also want a mix of other interests such as music, dance, art, sports, political interests, so on and so forth. And in Tulane’s case more than most, community service orientation is valued. More specifically for the merit awards though, academic achievement really dominates. After all, they are scholastic merit awards.

There are other scholarships available that emphasize other talents and interests, but they are not automatic. Community Service Scholarships, Music scholarships, ROTC is available, and I think there are a few others.

doingthisagain: The basics for DS: 4.0 WPGA and 32 ACT (superscore - although we’ve debated on the Tulane board if they superscore or not, one adcom said yes, another said no); his highest in one sitting was 31. Also submitted three very high SATIIs in Math and Sciences - again, they say they don’t look at these, but I think they might peak! 5 APs total, 1 college level class, the rest honors. Rank is top 5% of large public HS. DS has all around ECs that he is very committed to (music, sports, community service, club) and leadership. Has not visited yet, but we did attend local info session and he communicated with adcom during the local session and by email after. I’m sure the recs were good, although I only saw the one from the community service advisor (which is outside of school). Applied early (by mid-September).

I am thrilled with the acceptance and the scholarship. I hope he loves the school. I have a feeling it will come down to Tulane and Miami for him, but we have to wait till early Feb for Miami. He applied to three other colleges that are higher ranked in engineering (his desired major); while he may get into 2 of them, I can’t imagine they will be as affordable.

How did people find out already? I applied early action and I didn’t know they were telling us so early? Is this for people that applied early decision?

collegebound…you need to log into your Gibson account to find out if 1-your application is complete and then 2- if they have made a decision for you. You should have received an email with your Gibson account number and password. If you are accepted via Gibson, you will receive a letter in the mail approximately 7-10 days later.

Okay thanks. But I don’t understand why I got the decision so quickly. Is it rolling admissions?

CollegeBound - So are you saying you did get accepted? Either way, Tulane is not officially rolling admissions, but in practice they do accept EA and SCEA (and later RD) in what is essentially a rolling admissions practice. Tulane does not have ED, btw.

Looks like you are pretty set on Rice if you get in. What major are you considering?
