Tulane Class of '17 Admitted Students

fallenchem, agree 100%. He has an EA at umich but tulane has turned what was an easy decision into an interesting choice (if he gets into um)

You are right, that makes for an interesting choice. Is UMich in state or OOS for you? Is Wesleyan the ED school?

Accepted !
4.2 weighted GPA
1900 SAT
10 APs
Strong Extracurriculars, but no where near as much community service as others
Visited Campus, attended Tulane Comes to You event and communicated with admissions counselor
Applied October 20th
Found out via Gibson two days ago
Waiting on the letter still :)

Just got my letter today! Any advice on how selective the full tuition scholarships are? I have a 34 ACT and a W 4.124 GPA and several extracurriculars including leadership experience (president of 4-H club, etc.) Think I have a chance? And congrats to everyone else who’s gotten in!

fc, u mich oos, yes on wes. if not wes, will apply rd to mcgill and some small lacs and then make a decision. if not ed, will definitely be in NO for honors weekend in the spring.

Alpine95- anyone that wins the Presidential Scholarship is as much in the running as anyone else applying for the DHS and PTA. Otherwise they wouldn’t have given you their top no-other-application-needed scholarship already. Of course, it is a bit like competing for anything at the highest level, there will be more people applying than slots available. Probably by about a 10-1 ratio. But with a great project (DHS) or thoughtful, well-constructed essays, you appear to be a very solid contender. Just remember, they are due in 2 weeks!

Accepted and waiting to hear back from my ED school. However, the more I research the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (4+1 BSPH/MPH!!!), the more I’m drawn to attend if ED doesn’t pan out.

I may meet some of you next fall. :)

I sure hope to see you guys and your sons/daughters next year! Although we wouldn’t know who it was, haha.

Fallenchamist, I saw that your daughter won the DHS award. Do you mind sharing what she did for her project? Just curious :)

Accepted!!!
31 ACT
3.65 Unweighted, 4.35 Weighted
Applied early September, but had lots of problems with my application.
YAY!

Congrats Rachel. Way to stick with it.

alpine95 - not ignoring your request, I just had to get to some references I had already done for someone else rather than retype everything. Check out these old threads:

Hi,
I am someone who has been accepted to Tulane as well with a pretty good scholarship and an invitation to the honors program. My only concern is that even with the scholarship, Tulane is really expensive. Like really expensive. I have really wanted to go to Tulane for awhile(like a year and a half) but now I’m not sure if I can even afford it with the scholarship. So yeah, I guess I can really only go if I get CSS, or one of the other full tuition ones. :/

Oh, that might not be true at all. Aren’t you going to apply for need-based aid? Take a look at my post #2 on http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1423357-questions-about-merit-aid.html</a> starting with the third full paragraph. You might get a lot of grant money, which is “free” money. Anyway, read that and if you have questions pop on back here.

Probably not. My parents make decent money. But when comparing the price of Tulane(with 25k scholarship) to that of a UC, the UC really wins hands down. Kinda sucks. UC’s are great but I’d much rather go to Tulane. Also this makes me wonder: Why does Tulane cost so much? Yes, it is a good school but 45k tuition is really over the top. Idk. Maybe I’m just ticked I might not be able to go. lol.

well, yeah. It is almost impossible to beat instate tuition. As far as Tulane costing so much, without getting into the huge debate that is going on everywhere about the high cost of college, I posted a link recently that had a list of the 20 most expensive schools. Tulane wasn’t on it, but it had to be very close. Nearly all private schools similar to Tulane cost about that much. Vandy, WUSTL, Duke, Chicago, Northwestern, so on and so forth. But of course those are just sticker prices, most students get aid in some form or another. Still expensive, but obviously, $20-$27K makes a pretty big dent to start.

The UC’s are great, but the budget issues are really taking a toll on them. I am hearing about some big problems with getting the classes you need and kids starting to need a 5th year to finish their degrees because of required classes they cannot get. Still might be cheaper, but keep that in mind. No one cannot graduate from Tulane in 4 years because of that issue. Then of course there is the vast difference in class sizes, general environment, etc. Having said all that, I would never encourage anyone to take out more than a relatively small amount in loans, especially when an excellent alternative like the UC’s are available at far less cost (presumably). I haven’t really looked at the cost of attending any of the UC’s lately, since they bumped tuition so much. Would you be eligible for scholarships there, or would you be paying in-state sticker prices?

Thanks Fallenchemist!! I just read through all those threads and am now much more informed and nervous.

LOL!! Don’t be nervous, just be yourself. Anyone that makes it as far as you have is clearly one of the best and brightest. An overused phrase perhaps, but very apt. If you get one of the top scholarships, of course that is a wonderful thing. If not, you still have options that will help you get started on a path to a successful adult life. You will do great!

I just got into the honors college with a $25,000 distinguished scholar award!

This is so awesome! Am I still able to apply for the community service or DHS?

Also, anyone know anything about how much of a presence the honors college has on campus/ how legit it is?

supersaian - see the thread just posted yesterday about the Honors Program (not college, there is a big difference). Of course it is legit, what a question! LOL.

Yes, you can apply for both those awards, and for the Paul Tulane Award which, like the DHS, is full tuition. But they are both due Dec. 15, while the CS Scholarship app is due Jan. 15.
