General Comments (if any):

deferred, 4.64 W GPA, 1540 SAT. Full IB Diploma (all IB classes)
did I get deferred because they did not think I was actually going to enroll?

I know my son’s weighted GPA only. It’s 3.56. ACT 34, SAT 1490. Few EC’s and did not request an interview. He had many B’s and only one C-in his sophomore year. Has taken only 2 AP’s.

@smarttart So strange, I was deferred from Michigan Engineering but was accepted into Tulane with a 20k scholarship.

Was there anyone who got accepted but didn’t write the why essay? lol

anyone know how merit aid is determined? I’ve seen people on here with higher stats get less than I did, and vise versa. not complaining, just curious

@Jess3381 Probably because of yield protection and lack of demonstrated interest. On Naviance, basically no one goes to Tulane if accepted from my school, but many go to Mich.

Does anyone know if there any possibility for increased merit $? My daughter can’t attend unless she gets more. I heard they give a lot more than she got. Does she say that to the admissions counselor?

vball2525, I was wondering the same thing. I think it falls in line with why some people with similar or better stats were deferred or even rejected…it’s a big mystery.

@openeyesofbrown, yes. D’s stats are close to yours; she showed strong interest, met admissions rep and followed up with him with several emails. She was accepted.

berk2023, this is why you are seeing fewer people getting the $32K this year. I remember when this article was first published I was wondering if we’d get anything at all.

My first reaction was “you are not going to attract top candidates if you reduce/eliminate merit”, but now based on the amount of strong applicants they have, it makes sense for them to take a gamble and reduce merit (to our detriment unfortunately).

I don’t have the direct answer to your question if they will increase it or not. I read on these boards that generally they will not.

Reflection
Strengths: my essay was very good, went to multiple Tulane info meetings, strong courseload/grades
Weaknesses: never visited, not a great act score, minimal extracurriculars
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: not sure
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: deferred from Michigan; accepted everywhere else I applied so far (Ohio State, Georgia, Penn State, SUNY Binghamton, and a few others)
Where do you expect you will attend and why? not sure, my top schools are Michigan Tulane and UF so we will see

@AH1310 yes this exactly ^^. Part of why I even let her apply was I heard about the great merit they give. Especially since Katrina. I guess she’ll write to her admissions counselor and hope for the best.
I am out of work but of course the FAFSA looks 2 years back so I’m screwed…

deferred OOS from NJ w/ 3.7 GPA & 29 ACT

I thought even w/ lower stats my Why Tulane essay was the factor that could get me in,
also visited and showed all the demonstrated interest I could (interview, online chat rooms, multiple info sessions, emailed counselor, met with counselor, etc.)

it’s okay though! I’m probably gonna do ED II. congrats to everyone who got in!!!

@berk2023 – oh I think you have a compelling case. At first I thought you were like me and wanting more merit, because you want it  I think you should contact the FA office at Tulane and explain your situation of being out of work now. I am hoping they will work with you! Two years is a long look back. People lose jobs, divorce, death in the family and it changes their financial picture significantly.

@berk2023 – definitely appeal. Good luck, I hope your daughter can attend.

I got deferred- could my applications to DHS and Paul Tulane help my admission??

Deferred. 30 ACT 4.5 GPA. I was accepted into Georgetown 3 days ago

Deferred!
4.7 W GPA, 3.85 UW
1540 SAT
Full IB Diploma (all IB classes)
I applied for both DHS and Paul Tulane…if I get one of those, will I be accepted automatically? Since those decisions come out before April 1 right?
