Tulane Community Service Scholarship

What are my odds for the Tulane Community Service Scholarship? Every year since 8th grade I have volunteered to work in classrooms when the opportunity was presented. I also, on my own, have created my own program with the Rockhouse Foundation to fly down to Jamaica and teach the kids there literacy, computer literacy, english, and other things. I also raised money and surprised them with 2 iPad Minis, a computer, a wireless router, and 60 1gb flash drives. I am in correspondence on going back again this summer. What are my odds? I feel a strong connection to Tulane due to their emphasis on community service and therefore feel like its a great fit because of the mutual sharing of community service's significance.

It is impossible to know what your odds would be. It depends on many unknowns, not the least of which is the quality of your competition that year. And while the qualifications consider your community service record very strongly (obviously), academic qualifications do enter into the equation as well.

I hope you give the ACT a try, as I suggested on the other thread you started. Do some prep work and give it a try. You will improve your chances for both this scholarship and for a higher merit award, which could take care of your financial need as well.

Wow! Sounds like you have a good shot so long as the academic component is there. I’m applying for the same scholarship this year.

I absolutely have been doing prep! I’ve been doing SAT math prep every week. Do I need ACT prep too? I basically just need to boost each score by 100 and I’ll arrive at a 2010. My GPA unweighted is a 3.9 so provided I keep that where it is, I believe I should be alright in those regards. I plan on returning to Jamaica and hopefully strengthening the program in regards to how much we spend on supplies for the school and perhaps bringing down an additional person this year. Is there anything that would make my application more competitive, as far as community service is concerned?

I would at least try a couple of ACT practice tests to see how you score and if it is likely to result in something better than your SAT.

I think as far as your community service record you are doing all you can. It seems to me your time is better spent focusing on your weakest area, which is your standardized test score. Not that it is bad at all, just not as strong as your 3.9 UW GPA and your EC’s/community service.

okay awesome! Thanks for all the advise fallenchemist :)

I am also applying the Community Service scholarship! Do we hear back in the spring? Does anyone know how many people usually apply?

No idea how many apply. Winners are usually announced in mid-March.

Last year, winners were notified March 11. Don’t know how many apply or how many are awarded, but the number of students who earn the CSS and actually enroll is about 15-20.

In the past they would post that 30 are awarded. Don’t know if that is still the number, but it would be very consistent with a final enrollment of 15-20 winners.
