Hi!
I didn’t see a deferral thread, so I thought I would start one instead of lurking in the EA/ED thread. Chat away!
Hi!
I didn’t see a deferral thread, so I thought I would start one instead of lurking in the EA/ED thread. Chat away!
Deferred EA. 32 ACT, 4.89 GPA, AA Male. Been accepted to UNC, UVA, Vanderbilt, Emory, and Miami since then. I did get a good scholarship from UNC so Tulane might be out unless I get community service fellowship as well as other merit aid.
I was deferred EA with 32 ACT, 3.85 uw gpa. Definitely getting more and more nervous every week since they keep accepting bunches of RD people randomly; feels like the closer we get to what’s supposed to be the notification date the worse our odds are of getting in
D was deferred ED. We did everything we could think of to express continued interest and show that Tulane was her#1 with the exception of another visit (we are in WA) and still nothing. She applied in Sept. Deferred in October. I think we have given up hope of acceptance, I just wish they would give her a decision and put us out of our misery. I keep seeing EA acceptances after deferral which I don’t get- ED applied first, shouldn’t they get notifications before EA?
I was deferred EA with 29 ACT, 4.83 W GPA. Considering I’ll need a ton of FA or scholarships the prospects do not look good…
Admissions just told me that NO acceptances for Deferred ED students have been released yet so it sounds like we have to wait until the very last group of decisions. Incredibly frustrating.
@kinithia A lot of schools just deny students that are not admitted during ED.
Well then why not deny students back in November instead of dangling the hope of admittance later on? Its difficult to move on from your #1 choice school when the “maybe” of deferral is given to you. And then to make you wait until the end of the entire process when you applied back in October. Its just not cool.
@kinithia Can we agree that when it comes to a student’s #1 choice school the only thing that is “cool” is an admittance letter? You are not going to convince me that you would have been happier to have been denied in November. Hang tight it’s all going to be OK.
True, an acceptance is the coolest. But living in limbo is getting old. March is going to be a very long month.
I get that stats vary from year to year as personnel and policies change. Nonetheless, D was Tulane waitlisted and we are in a quandary as to how to proceed. D understandably wants closure and is ready to accept another OOS offer (with scholarship) although Tulane is her #1 choice. Wish I knew her odds of ultimately being accepted—any ideas out there?
@CenlaMom It seems like they waitlisted a lot of high quality kids this year. They will undoubtedly take a lot of kids off the waitlist but nobody in here can guess how close your daughter is to being one of those kids. It depends on such a variety of factors like where your daughter stands in the line of applicants for her particular major. To venture guesses based on averages would be exactly that…guessing. You would also have to guess at the aid piece too. Ultimately it’s a matter of how much she wants to go to Tulane if you want to endure waiting or not.
Didn’t I see that they haven’t taken anyone from the waitlist in a few years? Are they doing it differently now? US News says they offered 3,881 people a spot in 2016, 1,168 accepted and none were actually accepted to Tulane off of the waitlist. I heard similar stats for 2017. Is everyone expecting something drastically different for this year?
Hello @kinithia - Tulane has recently posted on their website how this year they are employing a little different strategy in that they have admitted a smaller group of students upfront and that they anticipate taking some kids from the waitlist. You are correct they have not taken kids off the waitlist the last couple of years and they mentioned that too.

@kinithia would you mind sharing your D’s stats/ scores? Wondering what scores got put on an ED deferral and then waitlist to calculate chances! Thanks!
S was Deferred, EA. Got into Kenyon, RPI, University of Rochester. Just waiting on Skidmore and Tulane. 100.3 GPA, valedictorian, RPI medalist, varsity basketball, Soccer, Polo, Jazz band, HOBY and a bunch of other stuff. not great SATs - 1320.
@LynchSmith 1320 is not bad. It’s 86th percentile which means he beat 86 out of every 100 kid’s that took the test. With his other accomplishments he has a very strong profile.
