did the strong students that got deferred answer why tulane??

I got deferred with a 4.0 UW GPA, 33 ACT, solid ECs and an app that was turned in well before Nov 15th. However, though my counselor mailed in her forms the day before, they did not show up online until a good two weeks afterwards. Could that be responsible for the deferral? Do I have to wait until April now?

There is no way to know what is responsible for the deferral, exactly. I will give you the same advice I am sure will be repeated many times. If you really think Tulane is the school for you, tell that to them. I can absolutely guarantee that unless there is something we cannot see in your record, Tulane would love to have you and the other students with the academic achievements you have attained. They just have to make sure, somehow, that there are about 1400 students come move-in day in August, not 1200 and not 1600. Tulane is becoming so much more popular, and a real choice of students that previously would automatically have chosen Duke or Vandy or Emory, for example. They are adapting to this change by trying to manage the acceptance numbers.

I hope you are trying for the DHS, Foxhound. Don’t worry that you were deferred, that has nothing to do with your stats or your chances for getting it. It would also show Tulane you really want to go there. But it has to be there in a week.

i have slightly less impressive statistics, did not even write the “why Tulane?” essay, and was admitted.

justwanttogetin - When did you get your admission?

add me to the list of inexplicably deferred too… I have a 32 ACT and a 4.5 weighted GPA. I turned my application in about a month before the deadline and so I’m completely baffled. I also suspect that they have a certain quota for the EA acceptances but regardless I’m not too happy. I’ll have my guidance counselor call

It will be interesting to see what they say to you, imaDIVER. Did you submit your application a month before, or was it showing complete a month before?

I was wondering why they lowered the class size. Forgive me if it has already been addressed. Thanks

Greater than predicted yield last year put a strain on housing.

I also got deffered today and I don’t understand why! I’m #2 in a class of 821 and have a 31 ACT Composite. I have solid EC’s and a pretty good personal statement and rec!! This makes me not want to come to Tulane!! My friend who had a 29 ACT got accepted and I definitely had a stronger app than her because we both did it together!!

After reading all the comments on Tulane’s CC threads, I sincerely hope Tulane’s Adcom can get its act together SOON. There is too much confusing and inconsistency.

I know…this is too confusing!! It’s not like Tulane is a Stanford or an Ivy League school for them to be acting so inconsistent and selective!

It’s called the Peter principle. I think the Tulane Adcom is suffering from the Peter principle.

seriously? grow up.

i would like to see any of us form a class of 1,400 students out of 44,000+ applicants and not **** anyone off. certainly the number and quality of applicants varies to a degree from year to year and i doubt admissions is psychic. they started the admit cycle with a plan and have had to make adjustments for reasons unknown. get over it. my bf has higher stats and more leadership than me and hasn’t heard back yet, nor has he turned on the school.

the practice of waitlisting or deferring extremely well-qualified applicants is fairly commonplace from what I’ve read. i mean, there is even a name for it “Tufts Syndrome”, as previously mentioned, and WashU is another prime example of a school using that tactic. it makes sense too, students with stellar stats often are more interested in “more prestigious” schools and apply to good schools like Tulane as back-up while they wait to hear from their top picks. i tried to make it perfectly clear to my admissions counselor (without being a nuisance, of course) that Tulane was right up there near the top of my list and i think it paid off.

originally, when i heard about this rash of deferrals i figured very high stats, coupled with less than obvious interest (and maybe unlucky timing), were to blame; after reading some of the comments of the most recent posters, however, i wonder if their whiny, entitled personas might have been a more important factor. i wouldn’t want to go to Tulane with a bunch of spoiled brats… and if the posters are actually parents, all the worse.

if you really, really want to end up at Tulane have your GC call and inquire as to the reasons for the deferral and express your interest, perhaps you’ll have a happy outcome. if not, and you’re just here to complain, go away and take your negativity with you.

Well, I didn’t mean to attack any one. If my comments read that way it’s certainly not my intent. Sorry and please ignore my comments.

Hey! Let us be mad ciaobella!

My intent in posting info about my daughter’s deferral was to reassure the original poster and others who have been deferred that they are not alone. It looks like Tulane may be becoming more popular and perhaps more selective than in years past. That’s a good thing for Tulane, and I’m not knocking the school. Congrats to all those who have been accepted, and good luck to all those applicants who have been deferred and to those who are waiting for a decision.

This is my last post about this subject and I would take back my earlier comments if I could. All I wanted to say was Tulane Adcom was probably suffering from growing number of applications that they were simply not equipped to handle in the most appropriate and timely manner. I apologize if I offended you.

sorry about that, i probably overreacted. i was really just referencing texasboy11 & cichlidfish’s comments… i guess i’m a little sensitive when people start bashing my favorite school haha. again, my apologies for kinda going overboard.

@cichlidfish

yes, let’s drop it. i am pretty on edge as a lot of my future is riding on things that get wrapped up this week; still, i apologize for going off. oh and sometimes it is a little inconvenient that posts on CC can’t be deleted.

in the adcom’s defense, i have had multiple interactions with the admissions office and my questions and concerns have always been handled warmly and professionally, in a timely manner. i do feel that whatever is going on with deferrals is deliberate and not a haphazard response to the admissions frenzy.
