I love that you came with receipts lmao
I donât disagree with anything you are saying, but tons of schools are in that same âbusinessâ and seem a lot less obsessed with requiring kids to shower them with love.
Of course they are entitled to do this and plenty of high stats students will comply. Mine wonât be one of them but best of luck to everyone. Kids really seem to like Tulane so all the best to you.
I completely understand your perspective. Most schools value the insightful WHY essay which they indicate is the best way to show demonstrated interest. I do think it is unfortunate that Tulane puts so much value in âshowing demonstrated interest,â especially this year, given the zoom overload and screen time students have endured this year. Expecting to be shown love " through emails to counselors" and attending multiple virtual sessions is not possible for all students (some have responsibilities after school etc and others donât have access to computers, IPADs, or phones.)
They are well known for yield protection and they are known for deferring high stats students. It is a matter of âfitâ I think.
I agree with you. Iâm so turned off by Tulaneâs ways.
My daughter was accepted last year EA and received one of the bug scholarships. She is one of the high flyers that would be targeted for deferral (36 ACT, president of everything, state honors, blah blah blah). The only âshowering of loveâ she gave Tulane was a single campus visit more for her than Tulane, and her Why Tulane essay and her scholarship application.
I think you have to look at the numbers they have applying. Is there some management to make sure they arenât left with empty spots, sure! But they cAnt accept everyone.
And I donât think that is singular to Tulane.
I never understood the value of joining 10 virtual seasons when all the information is available online. Besides the student panel discussions which my D truly enjoyed, most virtual sessions (not just at Tulane) have been mostly waste of time. Iâve also always wondered what students write to AOs. The only time my D had to contact admissions was to update her 2nd semester senior schedule.
I agree completely. They were very repetitive as well. Who had that kind of time?!
Does anyone know what kind of questions they ask for the BienvenueTU interviews ?
@CaBeachMom @OceanIsle - I would have (and did) agreed with you 2 years ago as I was first going through this process with my now sophomore son. It was frustrating to see and try to understand how Tulane was discerning between those who had high stats and those who were âshowing them loveâ through demonstrated interest. It was not high on my list (nor my sonâs) at the time we began the search process. Over time, however, it really crept into his vision as âthe place to be for himâ⊠Whether you call it⊠fierce yield protection or over-the-top demonstrated interest (or both), they are perfectly within their right to use whatever methods they have to guard spots for those students who they know REALLY want to be there. In fact, itâs not a secret at all and our counselor at HS has a very specific script he uses to ensure that these students know what Tulane is all aboutâŠ
ETA: FWIW, I personally believe that the free application (no $50-$75) is a double-edged sword. I canât tell you how many apply without having any intent or interest, only to be deferred or rejected when decisions come out. Along with that, people should understand that their acceptance rate and yield (ie âselectivityâ) is easily manipulated this way, and tricks would-be Ivy or top tier applicants with the hopes of an easy acceptanceâŠTheyâre not looking for those kids
@hmmnotsure1 , to your point I do think that Tulaneâs high focus on kids who make a well-above average effort (in the context of college admissions) to demonstrate their interest helps to ensure that Tulane holds onto that âhappiest studentsâ moniker. If you have a campus full of kids who were certain itâs where they want to be, thatâs going to lend itself to happiness.
I also agree that the no-fee app invites a ton of kids who donât intend to know much about the school, and that the school can and should weed those kids out.
We live far away. Itâs quite possible my (high stats, bc that is relevant) daughter would love Tulane if we could have visited. Since we couldnât, asking her to demonstrate interest to the level Tulane wants to see just feels disingenuous. So she has passed on that and we know sheâll likely be denied as a result. Thatâs okay, but it doesnât mean she wasnât a good fit for Tulane. Maybe Tulane would have been her favorite.
At least Tulane is very transparent. I give them a lot of credit for that and I really like the blog and AOs. They seem to like their framework and plenty of great kids will comprise their student body this year and beyond. Good luck to everyone!
Stuff about why youâre interested in Tulane and other kinds of things like that
They were weeded out by endless virtual events.
Totally agree on AO blog - heâs really good at his job (giving good info, both specific to Tulane as well as larger world of application).
In the end, they all find where they belong
Anyone have any updates on the Stamps scholarship?
Havenât heard anyone say that they have heard yet.
Did anyone else just receive a large envelope from Tulane that simply had general info about Financial Aid? I am surprised that they would send a full, 8x10 size envelope to kids waiting on decisions that was nothing more than an advertisement (though one other school did this a few months back).
Tulane sends a TON of promotional material. Granted, I donât remember what I got before being admitted but after I would receive 1 or 2 large envelopes like clockwork every month or so.
I simply wish they do not keep sending more invitations to virtual/online events.
When is the next RD wave?
You can unsubscribe if not interested in receiving emails anymore. However, keep in mind that Tulane is BIG on demonstrated interest and this is likely one of the ways they keep track.
