Tulane admissions does defer strong applicants in order to ‘test’ their interest in the university. If a AO thinks they are shooting higher and will not end up at Tulane. Some of this might seem random but if you love Tulane and really want to be there then go through the motions for regular! You can scroll through the thread and see that Tulane guessed right for some people
I stalked all of these threads from last year and it seemed like this is something that happens every year. Some deferred applicants got merit later! Don’t think of a deferal as a rejection, the AOs either wants to see how you’re doing right now, or your interest in the university. You’re still amazing, no matter the decision.
@lucky0318 ok, thank you! I’m not retaking anything, I just have tests that I took this month that were obviously not scored by the EA deadline.
I submitted my application through Tulane’s app rather than the Common App, so I hope my counselor can figure out how to send the transcript again. She seemed to have some trouble with submitting it before. I hope it is alright that it will be submitted after Jan. 3rd,there is no deadline for an update I hope.
Deferred. Started freaking out a little about other colleges when I got deferred from Tulane
Deferred from EA.
3.85 GPA. 29 ACT. Presidential Service Award, NHS, sports, clubs, and so on.
Posting for two reasons:
- I have seen on this thread what seems to be very qualified students being deferred. I am wondering when everyone applied, possibly this being a common denominator??
- Everything will work out, and you will end up where you are meant to be.
Differed EA
31C act
98.4 W
All IB classes
Great ECs

Deferred with 3.8 uw and 32 ACT
To all of you who have received a deferral…this is a deferral, not a denial. Do not give up hope. What this means is that you will now be considered in comparison to the regular applicant pool and for many of you with high stats and demonstrated interest, you will rise to the top of that pool and ultimately be admitted. Tulane only takes a certain number of students from the EA pool. For one reason or another, you were not one of them. But you still have a chance. This is a setback, and while disappointing and frustrating, this does not have to be the end. Just think of it as if there was not EA option and you had to wait until March in the first place…
For the question of what to do next…continue to show interest in Tulane.
If you have retaken the SAT or ACT, you can send new scores, but if you were not planning on retaking the tests, then just leave it be (most of you seem to have high scores already).
You do not have to resubmit your application. They have it.
Send an email to your admissions counselor and update him/her with your first and second marking period grades (you can attach an unofficial copy of your transcript and also have your guidance counselor send official mid-year grades). In your email, include any new accomplishments and experiences which were not included in your application (did you star in the school musical? are you taking a course related to your intended major that you are excelling in? have you participated in service projects or an independent study?..) Mention that while you were disappointed to be deferred to the RD pool, you remain certain that Tulane would be an excellent fit for you and that if admitted, you will attend (if this is indeed true) or that Tulane continues to be one of your top choices…Be respectful and mature in your email.
Tulane has grown in popularity in the past few years and rightfully so. It is a very special place. Admissions is a difficult, complicated, emotional and confusing process. Good luck and do not give up…
Deferred with 3.89 GPA and 1340 SAT. Great letters of rec, essay, EC…
Deferred
30 ACT

I applied 11-15 so maybe that’s why.
My application was marked as complete in early October and I received my acceptance and Presidential scholarship on 10/31.

I honestly have no idea why I was accepted, but good luck to everyone!!
Accepted EA!!!
Deferred
Thinking I was deferred due to the high stats/low interest phenomenon. Tulane is not my top choice, so they certainly guessed correctly, however I am still considering it, pending the results of my application going through a second round.
GPA: 3.9W
APs: 5 US History, 5 English Literature, 4 World History, currently taking Statistics, English Language, and Biology
Interest shown: None, RSVP’d to attend a regional event but did not attend/follow up much to my chagrin, guessing this did not help me
Essays: CA & Why Tulane? both solid/strong
From a top, competitive private high school
Submitted application in October, about a month before it was due.
Applied as an International Relations major interested in Homeland Security, based much of my Why Tulane? essay around these interests and my background and connection to New Orleans as a French-American dual citizen. Moving forward, I am wondering how I should show my interest–I live far away and will be unable to visit, so does anyone have any suggestions?
Must admit, being deferred did put a bit of a damper on the process and is making me apprehensive of my other decisions. However, my condolences to those who were denied, good thoughts to those who were deferred, and many congratulations to all those accepted!
Does Tulane do random releases for RD as well, or do they come out all on one date?
deferred with 33 act, 4.0 unweighted gpa, 8 aps, 9/10 CO essay, 1 10/10 teacher rec, played soccer, volleyball, and rugby. VP engineering club, latin Founded girls rugby team, 150+ volunteering hours from ecological foundation rehabilitation facility. thought for sure i’d be accepted, but i also applied on 11/15, so maybe they had last minute just to apply, tulane is actually my top choice … oh well, i’ll try again RD.
I was deferred ,too. Could you please let me know what is your test scores? Thank you .
deferred. 3.7 uw 4.05 weighted at top 100 private school in the country, top 25 in california. 31 comp ACT. Was my last choice out of schools I applied and therefore I don’t want to go there and they probably sensed it. To the people who really wanted to go here and got deferred, keep your head up and make sure they know you want to attend!
Deferred
SAT 2150
GPA 3.7
Internships, Pres. of school paper, lots of volunteer hours, Model UN, lots of honors classes, Aps not offered in my school but 8 college credits from summers at good university, piano for 13 years…
Trilingual, Asian female
Congrats to all those accepted!
Tulane was one of my top choices when I applied but now that I’m getting acceptances from other schools, I’m taking a closer look at these other schools and keeping an open mind. Waiting for Tulane to make a decision (or not make a decision since I got deferred) has made me realized that there ARE other schools out there that I could be just as happy at. So I guess I’m saying to all those who got deferred or denied, you will find your fit school - you just have to give it a chance. It will all work out.
is everyone deffered by default??? or do they reject early action too??
I was just deferred
New SAT 1380 with GPA of 3.9; two recommendation letters, wrote a pretty strong, appealing supplement essay
Never visited the school; lots of volunteer hours and service recognitions, research assistant etc.
From NJ asian, female
I thought I was pretty qualified for Tulane and was one of my top 5 schools, Congrats to all those accepted EA!!!
