Volunteer/Community service: required by school; none outside of that work.
Summer Activities: summer study in Los Angeles (2015) and in NYC (2016)
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App: 9/10. Essay deals with a struggle I faced throughout high school and how that struggle fundamentally changed me as a person.
Why Tulane: 8/10. Risky but good. I got specific and detailed and showed how Tulane would help me thrive.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: AP Government - 7/10. Generic rec that was short but did what it needed to do.
Teacher Rec #2: AP Spanish - 11/10. It was just beautiful. I cried when I read it.
Counselor Rec: 9/10 (guess) I did not read; however, he thinks highly of me. I also made every effort possible for him to know everything about me, so I know he had information to write about.
Additional Rec: I included two.
Ballet/Modern/Jazz teacher: 7/10 (guess) I did not read. Might have been great or generic.
Acting teacher: 7/10 (guess) I did not read it. He submitted it on Dec. 9, so I don’t know if Tulane read it or used it as an admissions factor.

Interview: It went well. We talked for an hour on everything from Scarsdale, NY, to Tulane’s mission. She seemed to like me. It was really casual.

Always remember that colleges are placing you in context of your school / region; they are not looking for perfection. Challenge yourself as you see fit.

Teacher Rec #1: (9/10)AP Physics I Teacher. He wrote a touching recommendation for a Summer program so believe he wrote another great recommendation (didn’t see)

Additional Rec:

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Chemistry
State (if domestic applicant): GA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large Public School
Ethnicity: African American
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 100K+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):URM

Reflection

Strengths: GPA, Test scores, and demonstrated interest (Visited campus in spring of junior year)
Weaknesses: No big awards or leadership positions
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I believe showing interest and being competitive stats wise was important and being an URM probably didn’t hurt.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted to Howard, Hampton, UGA, LSU, Alabama A&M, Tennessee St, Southern, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Florida A&M. Still waiting on North Carolina A&T and Georgia Tech.
General Comments: My daughter hasn’t decided exactly where she will go to school or whether she will go to a HBCU or PWI, but Tulane is near the top of the list. She has not worried about ECs and the college “rat race” but just about things that were important to her. I believe that being comfortable in her own skin is her biggest “superpower”.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common app essay 8/10- about being biracial; my counselor loved it, but I probably could’ve made it even better hence the 8/10. Activities essay 7/10- about piano and persevering. Why Tulane 9.5/10- really showed my love for and interest in Tulane through specific details about my visits, their programs, and New Orleans!
