My S just received a letter from Tulane addressed to him and his family. The letter reads in part " as the rest of the nations best universities discover what I already know about your high level of achievement, etc". At the bottom it indicates the info was supplied by the CollegeBoard, ACT, etc.

Is this just spam or do they have the PSAT results in and know the kid's score?

When students take the PSAT, SAT, and ACT they can check an option that permits that their scores be released to colleges that request them. Certain colleges asks for student info based on ranges of scores. If you son scored well on the PSAT, he can expect to receive dozens of these mailings in the next several months and hundreds over the next year. Even the most elite schools send out thousands of these, especially to scorers in the NMSF and NM Commended range.

yes, they probably received an electronic file of the psat scores, or at least a range; perhaps Tulane requested info for all kids who scored highers that xxxx.

fwiw: Last year, CB sent harcopy score reports to all high schools on Dec 5 (if I recall correctly).

I remember going through this last year. D got all kinds of mail before she received the PSAT scores from her school (in January also), which got rather nervewracking. Especially when Skidmore sent her one of their offbeat word postcards that said "FAIL".

The PSAT scores are a preview of the likely SAT scores, so a score of 60 on the math section would translate into a score of 600 on the SAT. If you look at the 25%-75% range for SATs, you should have a pretty good idea of what Tulane looks for in terms of PSATs. Writing to PSAT high scorers is a way of letting them know the school is interested in them and they should consider applying to the school.
It sounds like your S probably did quite well on the PSAT!

My daughter's SATs/ACTs are not particularly impressive, and Tulane has been emailing her asking her to apply and telling her that she is eligible to apply for a full tuition scholarship. My sense -- though it may be wrong -- is that Tulane is somewhat expanding marketing efforts this year -- it seems that my d. is getting the same sort of solicitations that my NM-qualifying son did, but his mail came much earlier in the admissions season.

And I do think that this is a good year to apply to Tulane -- my guess is that their yield is going to drop somewhat given the problems in New Orleans. They are probably well aware of that and will probably make concerted efforts to combat that, both through expanded marketing and by making attractive scholarship offers to good students who are admitted.

suggest you ask the GC nicely -- they are YOUR property, not the school's. IMO, a HS has no credible reason to hang onto the scores until after the holidays.

We received the exact same letter. Although, at the bottom of the letter, it similarly states that scores were furnished by blah blah blah.....we had been to a Tulane reception in our area. So, I don't know what is driving the Tulane train.....
