Tulane or Cornell?

MartiniGirl - you are right, this is for AKW. But since you have us all curious now, is your S picking Tulane or are there other schools in the running?

Thank you for your interest, fallenchemist. Tulane is his #1 choice of schools that have accepted him. However, until all the results were back, his first choice was Wake Forest (where he is now waitlisted). He is torn between these 2 schools. Don’t quite know yet what he will do. Time is running out for him. I feel he will be happy at either school (and, once he settles in and makes friends, he will definitely not go to Cornell after the first year). What are your thoughts?

Hi Martini (why do I get thirsty just typing your name?) - That really is a very tough one! I don’t know that much about Wake, although I know it is a fine school. Interestingly, Tulane and Wake were both founded in 1834. Just a little trivia. I have heard that Wake is not as diverse as Tulane, both geographically and ethnically. Looking at their stats for the incoming classes, it seems to be just a notch below Tulane that way also. I have driven through Winston-Salem a couple of times, and while it is a lovely part of the country, it certainly is very different than New Orleans. Not better or worse, just different, and of course that is all personal preference. So while I cannot offer much advice in this case, I am sure you are right that he would be happy at either school. Frankly I am surprised Wake WL’d him. Maybe they assumed he would be accepted at a higher ranked school and just go there. Schools play those kinds of games.

Thank you for the info, fallenchemist. You stated “Looking at their stats for the incoming classes, it seems to be just a notch below Tulane that way also.” Where did you find this info. I would like to show this to my S.

MartiniGirl717 – the current (2008 entering) Collegeboard.com stats show that Tulane has a slight edge over Wake re. SAT and ACT scores. Tulane stats for the incoming class (2009) are estimated to be higher yet. See FallenChemist’s post concerning this in the Tulane vs. Vandy thread.

Yeah, I PM’d Martini cause I thought we were getting too far off topic.

Oh yes, I’ve been reading!
I went to visit cornell and really didn’t like it. My host seemed miserable (she was a BME major), and whenever we met any other engineers, my host would ask them why I should come to Cornell. I thought it was a bad sign when they struggled for an answer.
I feel like I’d fit more at Tulane, and I’m almost positive I’d be happier there. I’m sending in my deposit later this week. Thank you all for your help!

I’d also like to point out that I posted the same question on the Cornell forum. The people who responded here were (overall) much more helpful and considerate.

Were we not considerate? Anyway, congrats on your choice, I am sure we all wish you nothing but the best.

akw2013 – I’m a very considerate person and am 99 percent sure I will be attending Tulane next year. I’m going to Destination Tulane Thurs. and, based on previous posts re. respective DT visits, should clinch the deal. All the best to you.

fallen akw said “the people who responded here were overall much more helpful…”

Yes, I can see now how it is ambiguous. I read it as the “here” referring to the last subject mentioned, the Cornell forum, but your reading of it is much more logical. Thanks Emory. I knew we Tulanians were a superior group, LOL.

btw Emory, have you decided on Tulane, or are you still pondering?
