@TheMosby said you based the tuition at UIUC @ 15 credits per semester. Is that enough credits to graduate in 4 years? Tulane charges a flat rate per semester for a full time student.
You got me curious @DebmomNY so I checked their web site. Like Tulane, UIUC requires 120 total hours to graduate for most majors. There are exceptions, but that seems to be the most common set up at most schools. Where students run into problems, usually, is if they change majors late and cannot get all the required courses for that particular major, usually about 30-45 hours taken in specific courses out of the 120. Although at the UC’s and a few other schools there are stories of students who never changed majors and still got blocked out of required courses. I have not heard of that at UIUC but one would have to ask to be sure. It never happens at Tulane.
@DebmomNY
I don’t think that is a problem, at any school…
Hi Mosby, I’m going to jump in here because I live in Champaign (currently a high-school senior) and am taking classes at the U of I so I’m pretty well acquainted with the campus and the institution (not as well as an actual UIUC student would be of course, but more so than the average Joe). I thought I might be able to help if you have any questions about the city of Chambana or the UIUC campus/institution.
I didn’t apply to UIUC because I really really need to get out of Illinois (I’m actually strongly considering Tulane), not because I particularly dislike Champaign or UIUC. It’s a very nice college town and the campus is pretty nice, lots of parties and such if you’re into that scene.
So anyways if you have any particular questions let me know and I can try to help
@TheMosby For whatever it’s worth, we have a very happy kid at UIUC majoring in PoliSci.
@Midwest67 That’s wonderful.
I’m not doubting that kids at one school are happier than the other, I’m more looking for my personal, specific fit.
You need to really think this thru. Tulane is notorious for Sorority problems. They are extremely cut throat and very clicky, many of the parents politic to get their children in the Greek, it’s a joke. Go to UIUC, trust me, New Orleans is great, but Tulane is full of a hierarchy based on the Greek, the administration should be ashamed.
I suggest researching the social scene and other aspects of each school as thoroughly as you can. There are a lot of unsubstantiated rumors out there and it would be a shame if you made an unfortunate decision based on something false. The good thing is that both Tulane and UIUIC are two excellent, albeit different, institutions so you’ll be fine at either one. Good luck!
