Tulane Random Roommate or try to find one yourself??

My Ana will be going to Tulane this Fall-- unfortunately she is going to be unable to attend orientation in June. After reading some OLD posts on here it seems like Tulane students meet in June orientation -- then pick roommates and start pairing up?! Are we at a serious disadvantage ... nervous about a random roommate selection - don't want her to start off college on the wrong foot - sooo far from home ( we are from Las Vegas). Any Advice?

Is she on the facebook group? Students are finding roommates that way too!

yes she is …but its hard because , of course, everyone puts their best side out there - hard to know peoples real personalities etc via facebook .

Last year, my D was not able to go to orientation either. She used the FB page and found a few possible roommates, chatted with them, and chose one. I would think most people would be honest about how much they plan to party and how neat/messy they are and those are probably the most important things. She got lucky because they got along well even though they didn’t become best friends. I would suggest trying to find one on FB but if not, don’t stress about going random.

It is hard to know from Facebook. But on the other hand, before the Internet and Facebook, etc. people did just fine with random roommates. I would wager that the roommate pairing success rate after a semester isn’t much different between the two groups. Because as we all know, no matter how great the “dating” is, you really don’t know someone until you live with them!

But I should add that my D met her first roommate using Facebook or Roommate Click, I forget which. Didn’t become best buds, but they got along fine and remained friendly throughout their time at Tulane.

At orientation the roommate question was discussed. Ross Bryan, the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs for Housing & Residence Life, said that about half of the incoming students choose a roommate and about half go random. And, he said, they were about equally successful!

Thanks for that, @DebmomNY. Good guess for me!
