Tulane Scholarships

Okay... the fb discussion is really long and huge, so I am posting here responses from people who actually did receive the scholarship... And where they ended up.

"My project wasn't anything special... I wrote an essay about thinking outside the box, I wasn't really expecting to get it but I think they take your entire application into consideration, not just your project. They mentioned in the letter about how they were impressed with my combination of athletics and academics, which didn't really have anything to do wiht my project." -This girl decided on Tulane.

"ha, I um, went through all my saved notes and notebooks from school over the years and cut out notable (no pun intended) doodles. I put all the doodles together on one page and described or commented a little on each. Then I wrote a handwritten stream of consciousness that relates doodles to life. so yeah. i wouldn't worry about leaving the house, they didn't need a signature or anything, they just left it by the door. Honestly I wouldn't worry about gpas and test scores. from what I hear thats not entirely what this is based on. but i know i'd probably what to know if i were you, so ill tell you that i had over a 4.0 gpa and a 34 act." -This girl is now at University of Chicago.

"Got mine! 10,000$ of monopoly money! Woo!" -This boy decided on Tulane

"for the box i did the "evolution of a doodler". i took samples of doodles from my books and notebooks that i've done in class over the past four years of high school and described what i was like at that time. i sent in pages from the odyssey that i doodled and scribbled on freshman year then from sophmore yr. etc. and explained how i have changed a lot over my four years at boarding school then went on to say that i hoped to see further progress and development at tulane. i have a solid gpa, test scores and have a lot of extra curriculars and leadership positions, which probably helped. honestly, don't worry though, i bet because i live far away they ups'ed it to me so more are probbly in the mail. tulane is really great with financial aid too, so i'm sure the fact that you submitted a dhs project will show your commitment to tulane" -She's also at Tulane now

"I got a giant printer box and then cut out a bunch of the boxes and put big Xs over them and put the empty papers all over the box, and it was all like "think outside the box"
it was kind of cool, but i can't really describe it. you had to see it. 2330 SAT (800, 750, 780)" -She's at Minnesota

"received mine in chicago today!!! totally stoked, for my project i wrote an essay that was actually the best ive ever written in my opinion and then included a detailed and lengthy powerpoint about all the different "facets of jake" & how they would each contribute to NOLA & tulane as a whole. pretty sweet scholarship, im kinda torn between all my schools now :/ btw, stats were 4.89 GPA (on 4.0 scale) & 35 ACT. Good luck everyone!!!" -He's at USC

Hope this helps... As you can see, there are many different things you can do! It's all about choosing what shows who you truly are.

Thanks trackie! Unlike other people, you are actually helpful!

so my D received the $17,000/yr scholarship with her acceptance. she would like to go for the DHS (she actually has a really good idea for the project) but her SAT and ACT are on the low side (2080 and 29). is it worth putting the effort in?

newken,
While she has nothing to lose, last year they said they had over 10,000 applications and offered 100 scholarships (40 accepted)

If they haven't received my transcripts yet even though i sent in my application on oct. 27, could i still qualify for the regular merit scholarship if I do get in? My school has send out a paper copy of my transcrips along with the common app online one. I applied with the personal application. I don't know if i missed the deadline.

x3xkimiex3x --

yes, all applicants are considered for merit aid throughout the complete application cycle... of course, realistically, the sooner you are in the cycle the better off for aid.

There are a couple of other scholarships that you need to fill out separate applications for. One of which is the DHS which is full tuition, but that deadline is usually in mid-Dec.

jym-

I find it hard to believe that 10,000 people applied for the DHS last year. That's almost twice the size of total undergrad enrollment...

aplofchan,
I would encourage you to contact the Tulane admissions staff if you would like that statistic confirmed. I cannot recall if that was on the letter her received with the DHS offer or if it was presented at the honors students weekend, but they clearly stated that they received over 10,000 applications for the DHS last year. Remember, over 34,000 students applied to Tulane last year. The only statistic that was not initially consistent was that the DHS offer letter said that they only offered the DHS to 50 students, when in fact there were 100 offered, with the hope of getting a yield of 50 (they got 40). Hope that clarifies, and good luck.

What factor would be most important in judging your project- creativity, personality, or scholarly approach?

I know I sound like an idiot but... when you say, for example, $17,000 scholarship/year does that mean you pay 17k or its tuition minus 17k? I'm confused...

Sagharbor,
It means the school contributes $17k towards your cost of attendance. If, for example, tuition plus room and board plus fees, etc is approximately 50K, the school would subtract 17k from this cost.

Wait the Dean's Honor Scholarship covers only full tuition and no room and board, correct?

With all due respect-- these questions are answered pretty clearly on the Tulane website. Yes, azn, the DHS is a full TUITION scholarship (ie tuition only).

wait, this might seem like a dumb question, but does it have to be with their box, or can we just like paste things on a 8 by 11.5 piece of paper. It just says that it has to fit in your folder. How can you do powerpoints and stuff with the box given. Am i missing something?

You have to include the box in your project somehow. Your whole presentation doesn't need to fit in the box.

I guess this is kind of late for the DHS questions now, but the box doesn't even really matter at all. I didn't even realize we were supposed to be doing something creative with the box until someone asked on the facebook discussion what we all did with the box. And I still got the scholarship.

Okay, I have a question. If the DHS is a full "tuition" scholarship, can we combine it with other merit that we have received?

^Deans Honor Scholarship

[quote]
Students may not receive a Dean's Honor Scholarship in combination with any other Tulane merit scholarship, ROTC scholarship, Faculty-Staff Tuition Waiver or Tuition Exchange Scholarship. Students may combine the award with a partial athletic scholarship. Students offered a Dean's Honor Scholarship may qualify for need-based aid.

^^^^ The DHS CAN be combined with the National Merit scholarship, which is an additional $2k/yr from Tulane. However, the DHS **replaces **the merit scholarship $$ you may already have been awarded from Tulane (the Founders, Presidential, etc).

And note that it only covers tuition, not fees. If you look on the website

Cost of Attendance 2008-2009

it groups tuition and fees together but look more closely and you'll see that the DHS basically covers around $36,000 a year, so just tuition, not fees. I think what showed up on my first semester statement was $17,700.
