Tulane Spring Scholars

My son applied EA to Tulane but would be willing to be a Spring Scholar. Does anyone know if he would get deferred to General Application pool first and THEN possibly get offered the Spring Scholar program at end of March or do they make the offer of the Spring Scholar spot in November/December?

This was just posted to Facebook today: https://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2017/12/spring-scholars.html?fbclid=IwAR1agrDaxlSwP8eRxVgyw9Bj6jZrhmduCTm6GjYhUkfRoSRKeHc_g9mJvWg

Thanks! The article seemed to indicate that the Spring Scholars come from the ED pool - didn’t say anything about the EA pool…other than their SAT scores were really high!

I read it as coming from both ED and EA groups. It says ED decisions released 11/20? Yikes! Next week!

Typically Spring Scholars is only offered to ED students. It is non binding. They just released information about the program mentioning they cut their ties to Loyola and having any classes taken there and transferred to Tulane for spring semester (upon admittance) is unlikely. Seems that going abroad (which many students choose) or studying someplace else for credit are the only options. In the past it is a great option for Tulane because the SS students live in the apartments right off campus…sublet from students who are abroad (Tulane goes abroad 1st semester not 2nd because of Mardi Gras) so they are really living the Tulane life without a single hiccup. Tulane also has Greek Rush second semester. However, this recent change definitely changes the dynamic and seems much less appealing unless choosing abroad. I think Tulane had no option to make this change because they clearly had more students than anticipated accept this program. Tulane also announced an ED2 now for students to switch from EA before they hear.

@skatz111 My D applied EA and just got an email offering the switch to ED2, but it says the deadline for switching is AFTER the decision release for EA, so she can wait to learn her decision before deciding to switch to ED2. This seems weird to me. So if she is accepted, what would be the reason for switching to ED2 and making it binding so early? If she isn’t accepted, does that mean she could then try to switch to ED2? Anyone know?

Anyone receive a Gibson Portal Login email without applying for Financial Aid? Applied ED and just got a login email to Gibson over the weekend. Confused as it says it is given to only the applicants who applied for FA. Anyone?

@candoitall according to the little box on the side of the Green Wave Portal, the Gibson Portal is both for FA and scholarship. However, the school most likely won’t release anything until the ED/EA deadlines.

@sfstressed Have you received your Gibson Portal login ? We didn’t apply for FA and the email just arrived over the weekend.

@candoitall Yes, I received my login information this morning. I reached out to my admissions counselor yesterday (after my interview) and she said I most likely wouldn’t get portal access until admissions decisions have been made, but then I got an email early this morning. Again, the Gibson portal will later display FA and/or merit scholarship information.

Not sure if this Spring Scholars discussion is the best place for this discussion, though. Here’s a link with another person’s question about the Gibson portal: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/2162507-tulane-universitys-gibson-portal-class-of-2024.html#latest

@momof3co (I am only basing this on what I was told. I don’t know first hand. I have a student at Tulane who is a senior) Last year, some students were sent an email after they were deferred to switch from EA to ED2 improving their chances of admittance. The students that received this email were either students who were very close to meeting the requirements and those students who, on paper, appear to have grades/scores exceeding their requirements but showing NO DEMONSTRATED INTEREST (red flag for Tulane. They think the student is applying as a safety). I suppose Tulane felt that this offer would increase their yield but also allow students to show their commitment to the school and in turn, increase their chance of getting in only this time ED making it binding. I think Tulane is only “putting it out there” to let students that applied EA know that there will now be an ED2 and should they get deferred, they can switch to ED2. I would double check with admissions but it seems like more of a heads up and an opportunity to discuss with your child if this is something they would want to do should they not get in first round of EA. Tulane is very expensive and I also believe that switching to ED2 also eliminates any chance of merit based awards. I would certainly call admissions. I’ve spoken to the crew there a lot and they are all great to speak to. Good luck!

@skatz111 Thanks so much for taking the time to share all of what you were told. I don’t know if it’s related, but my D also got the opportunity to register for an alumni interview, which I actually didn’t expect since only 3% of the last incoming class came from our region (western states including ours, CO). So she demonstrated interest by registering for the interview, but maybe she is on the border so they are checking things out?
