I thought i’d start a thread for EA applicants. I saw today that they are offering ED2 and the application opened today. My child didn’t receive an email about ED 2 and her portal has no ED 2 Button. Does anyone have an ED 2 button on their portal? Did anyone receive an email about ED2?
@Illinoismom23 I just received an email about ED2 this morning, as the parent, so I assume my son received one as well.
The part I don’t understand: “The January 6 deadline also means that students can wait to switch to ED II until after they have received their EA admission decision.”
If you get in EA, why would you switch to ED2? Or is this intended for those who are deferred?
And I guess that means EA will hear before January 6, instead of January 15 as previously communicated.
Does this definitely mean student was deferred?
Would love to hear more about this as well.
I applied EA and received both my Gibson Portal login information and an email promoting ED2 this morning. Nothing is definite until final decisions are released, but there seemed to be a trend between EA/ED2 suggestion and deferral among applicants last year. In other words, ED2 is designed to be the ultimate display of commitment and reduce their yield rate. Highly qualified EA applicants were deferred last year, and if you are certain Tulane is you #1 school, switching to ED2 could help your/your student’s chances.
I do believe that last year (call 2023) certain students that applied EA and deferred were then contacted to “switch” to ED2 for better odds of getting in. However, last year ED2 was an option prior to deadlines. I am not sure what the reasoning is behind this “selecting door 3” before seeing what’s behind “door 2” either. If I had to guess, they had a higher number of qualified students applying ED than last year which means fewer spots will be available for EA. This is probably the driving force behind tweaking the spring scholars program as well. At the end of the day Tulane is a small/medium size private university. It is becoming more and more competitive each year. Far too many students have used Tulane as a “safety” to other schools (Vanderbilt, etc) and they are trying to shed this reputation.
Yes we got the email as well, and I was also confused.
We got the email too. My guess is that they sent that email to all EA applicants to see if they can entice them to apply EDII.
Hello! I got that email as well today. I think that they are trying to say that if you are deferred early action, they would like you to consider applying early decision II. This shows that you really want to go there and will give you better odds at getting them regular decision which you might be deferred to. This is why they are keeping it open till January 6th so that way everyone who applied early action can get their decision back. They just really want people to stop using them as a safety, which they are no longer in my opinion. I know this is trouble some for many, including me. Tulane is my top choice but I cannot afford to do early decision. I cannot go in blindly and end up having to pay 76,000 a year if I don’t get any scholarships or financial aid. It’s all so messed up in my opinion and it sucks for students like me who really want to go to Tulane but can’t afford it. Either way, best of luck to your daughter!
I agree with madcat5566. I think this is a numbers game for Tulane to increase their yield. We can’t ED anywhere because we need to see Merit scholarships and financial aid. So we are also hoping DD is strong enough of an EA candidate.
Anyone get login access to Gibson Portal but didn’t apply for Financial Aid? I applied ED and just received Gibson Portal access but never applied for FA. This happen to anyone?
Last year Tulane filled 28% of its class with ED applicants. The more they accept ED (I and II) the fewer RD spots and the higher the yield; Here is Jeff Schiffman’s explanation: http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/
Did you apply for any scholarships? I know I read on there somewhere that you will find out what you got in scholarships on there. Could be wrong.
Don’t read into the ED2 email and an indicator of a potential EA decision. ED2 provides second ED opportunity for students who have not been accepted by their ED school or who are eventually deferred in EA. It is simply another option in the process after some of the admissions decisions (both at and away from Tulane) begin to be made and choices begin to narrow. But don’t assume that because you received the email that you are likely to receive an unfavorable EA decision.
Does anyone know how many students applied EA to Tulane? My D20 applied and my assumption is that she and many others will be deferred. It would be helpful to think about the ED2 option if we knew more numbers …
I do not believe those numbers are released until after acceptances are complete.
I’m assuming every EA applicant got the email. However, the blog says, “many of you seniors” Does this infer not everyone got it? Does anyone know an EA applicant that did get the email about ED2?
FYI my daughter received the email and has not yet applied. It is in on her CommonApp list which apparently schools are notified about, but she didn’t finish the supplement before the EA deadline.
My S applied EA and got the email about ED II, checked with two of his other friends who applied EA - they also got the same email. I am assuming they sent it to all EA applicants as another option should they get deferred
