Hope that everybody’s been doing well through this trying time. Current rising sophomore in undergrad/college here from Louisiana. Will be applying to transfer to Tulane this upcoming fall, 2020 for spring, 2021. If anybody else is, please feel free to join the forum and contribute any stats/advice/updates!
Hi! I’m planning on applying to Tulane as a Spring 2021 transfer! It’s honestly one of my top choices, and I’m literally already anxious about a decision (even though the app hasn’t even opened yet)
Literally SAME. I’ve been in contact with a Transfer Ambassador, the Transfer Admissions Counselor, and a regular Admissions Counselor. I want to try to align my upcoming fall semester schedule as close to what they’d like and prefer to see in an applicant. On their website, I think they say something about English composition, foreign language, and math and at least a 3.0 GPA (3.3+ gets the standardized test scores requirement waived). The Admissions Counselor basically restated that in our emails. I’m taking summer classes right now so I won’t know my updated final cumulative GPA until August. And that’s what’ll be used in our transfer application for spring since applications are due on October 15.
But anyway, I’m looking very forward to the application. I’ve been mentally making a list and brainstorming ideas for what to write about in my essay. What state are you from?
@spate69 I’m from New York! Tulane is a HUGE in the NYC area, and honestly my biggest worry (and pretty much only worry) is that I’ll know way too many people there before I even get there. Literally something like eight or nine kids went to Tulane from my graduating class alone of like 130 kids. I have 31 completed credits as of right now, but over the summer I’ll be taking 12 credits (6 are already done, but I haven’t gotten my final grades back) and in the fall I’ll be taking the normal courseload of 15. So I guess by the Spring semester I’ll have 58 completed credits.
So are you a rising junior now? That’s so cool - I didn’t think it’d be that popular in NYC, especially when you consider all the options up there! I’m a rising sophomore from Louisiana and I go to a school about an hour or so away from Tulane. I didn’t get in when I applied back in high school so I’m really hoping they can offer admission for either (preferably) spring or maybe fall even. What’s your intended major at Tulane?
@spate69 I’m actually not entirely sure what class standing I am. I finished my freshman year in the spring, and I’m taking 4 classes over the summer and 5 in the fall so I have no idea what I’ll be by the spring (especially because I don’t know which credits Tulane would accept). I’m planning on applying for the Political Science major! You?
Oh okay. Well I just began studying at college over this past spring, and am taking summer classes right now so that I’ll be officially done with freshman year and considered a sophomore. And I’m in the same boat- I have no idea what classes they’d accept and let transfer. Hopefully not too, too many will be cut off. I’m going to be taking 15 hours in the fall at this point in time, so I should be just a regular, freshman plus half a sophomore year done and be on track, if they accept me. I already know that 4 of my classes aren’t going to transfer, so that stings and burns a bit. But oh well- I honestly don’t mind spending an extra summer or semester making up for that if that’s the cost of getting into Tulane! And if I get accepted to Tulane, I’d like to go into Public Health. They have this really neat and cool dual-degree program where you can earn you Bachelor of Science in Public Health and then as part of the same program spend an additional year to get your Master’s! It’s the only one in the state.
@spate69 ooooh nice! I’m hoping to go to law school after I finish undergrad, and I’ve heard some really good things about the Political Science department at Tulane, so I’m of course also really hoping I get in. I know Tulane is super competitive already, but I have no idea how competitive it is transfer-wise (since some schools reserve a certain amount of spots every year for transfer students, and others admit transfer on a completely space-available basis), especially with this whole COVID thing going on. I certainly wouldn’t have gotten into Tulane as a freshman, but hopefully it works out for both of us!
Yeah, same. I’m super anxious about it all because I got rejected the first time for my freshman year. So I’m really hoping that they sort of forget that and instead focus more on how my freshman year went. Which wasn’t too pristine either if I’m going to be honest, but whatever. I can’t change it now and all I can do now is hope for the best! After my summer classes end in just 2 short weeks, my GPA will be changed (not sure if positively or negatively, yet) and that’ll be what Tulane sees since their application is due before fall semester ends. I’m really hoping that the essay is the number one thing they look at because that’ll give us a chance to explain things, and not just have numbers to judge us off of.
I’m not sure where I read this, but I think they take in on average 175 transfer students? Hopefully we’re 2 of them!
@spate69 Woah I’m totally in the same position as you. Honestly my high school record wasn’t impressive at all, so I’m also really nervous about Tulane specifically because it’s the only school I’m applying to that requires a high school transcript. I didn’t apply to Tulane as a senior in HS because I knew I wouldn’t get in, and the only people that did get in that I know of were in the top 15 list that my school publishes (we weren’t officially ranked or anything, but every year at graduation the highest 15 GPA’s and where they were going to college were shown on the screen). As of right now I have a 3.90 GPA, but I expect that go to down to a 3.86 once our grades for Summer Session 1 are officially posted and calculated into our GPAs.
Oh wow, then in that case, I’m definitely, positively, highly sure that you’ll get in. With a pristine essay explaining why you genuinely what to transfer to Tulane, combined with your amazing GPA, I’m sure you’ll receive admission to Tulane. I SO WISH my GPA was even nearly as high. I grew up in a tiny, tiny village in rural Louisiana where the high school mainly prepared kids for entering the workforce. Nothing impressive at all- no Honors, AP, any gifted classes, nothing. And the classes were dismal, of course. But I worked hard with what I had and had a nearly perfect GPA and was in the top 3 of my tiny class. Well, when I started college, it felt like I was thrown into this huge, upper-level college with advanced coursework and as if it was un-managable. Which is expected when you’ve been top of your class doing the bare minimum in high school, you know? So basically, my entire freshman year was rough. Honestly, I really need to apply to Tulane as soon as possible so I can stay on track with its Public Health program I’m going for. BUT…if my GPA doesn’t improve over this summer, or if my classes don’t go well even with the amount of effort I’ll put in this fall, I’ll just hold off on applying to Tulane for spring and instead have hopes for attending in fall, 2020. My GPA is quite low already , but that’s why I’m having a lot of hope for my essay. We’ll see…
@spate69 Thank you so much! Honestly, I totally get how you feel. College is such a crazy experience that is nothing like high school at all. It’s a totally new environment and there’s really nothing that can prepare anyone for that kind of thing (except boarding school I guess, but who has the money for that). And honestly, even if you don’t get into Tulane as a transfer for the Spring, I’m sure you’ll be able to raise your GPA in time for the next cycle! I’m not sure how much more or less competitive transfer admission is for the Fall, rather than the Spring, but I totally have confidence that we’ll both be able to pull this off!
@spate69 Thank you so much!! I got the email saying I had a status update to my application around 5:30 in the afternoon, but I didn’t check it until later in the afternoon because I was worried if it was a rejection it would ruin my mood for the rest of the day. I was definitely not expecting a decision to be made so quickly, since it hasn’t even been three whole weeks since all of my application materials were received.
@spate69 I’m not 100% going yet, but honestly since they surprisingly ended up giving me a solid scholarship, I’ll probably deposit once I get my other decisions back, which sadly isn’t until around late November.
I’m planning on applying for fall 2021 admission. I’d be entering as a sophomore and I’m really nervous about financial aid. Anyone thats been admitted as a transfer, did you get a considerable about of FA?
@williameyelash I didn’t apply for FA, but in an email sent to me it said that even if I did apply I still wouldn’t know yet about any amount given to me, and I heard back from Tulane about my acceptance in early September. However, they did give me a pretty good merit award so you would still have a shot at that on top of any FA they do give you. Good luck!
Hey everyone. I am going to try to transfer to Tulane in the Fall of 2021. I don’t know what my chances are, but am hoping for the best. My high school GPA wasn’t great, but I am hoping to make up for it with my College GPA. Good luck to everybody!
