Hello!!! I find myself very fortunate to be stuck deciding between Tulane University and The University of Rochester. I am planning to study along the pre-med track. I know both of these schools have great programs, but I was wondering if anyone could reply and tell me what stands out about each school and if one school has a better program (or is regarded higher) than the other. Thank you!!
In a couple of rankings, University of Rochester biology/science related programs seem to be higher. But, difficult to compare on the basis of such rankings alone. I know a bit more about Rochester, as I am also keen on pre-medical program, and deciding between Univ of Rochester, Wesleyan, and UCSD. A friend has an offer from Tulane, but not interested in sciences. Said some great things about the school. Several seem to speak quite highly of Rochester.
I know URoc has their medical school/hospital right next to their undergrad campus (literally across a street). This makes it super easy for my pre-med guy to volunteer in the hospital and one of the labs he worked in was there.
Part of the reason he applied to URoc to start with was due to having the hospital essentially on site. Some other places have their hospitals a distance away making doing anything there on a daily or weekly basis somewhat more difficult. Doing things like he does during the school year is not a must for pre-med students (any college tends to work for pre-med). He just likes it and was given this tip by others with similar affinities who were already in med school.
I’ve no experience at all with Tulane to know if this is a difference or not.
My son will be a business student, deciding between USC, UIUC, Michigan, Emory, Tulane and Maryland among others. Have you visited Tulane? Tulane was not really on our radar until the visit. Now, despite not being ranked as high, Tulane has zoomed to the top of the list. Choose where you will be happy.
My son was making the same choice last year. I asked your question last year and got fabulous responses. Look back to last year. My son chose Tulane and it has been a great decision so far. Good Luck in your decision.
Thank you for all of your replies!!
@stellabubba I read your thread! Did your son decide to go pre-med? How does he think the classes and opportunities are so far? Thanks so much!
Just graduated from Tulane. In terms of college experience I do not think any school in the country can compare. However, the academics may be better at rochester but Tulanes “reputation” may be better.
^^^^This post was from April. OP would have decided one way or the other by May.
