Thank you very much for the update. It sounds line your daughter made the right decision and your details about CoC will be much appreciated by future readers contemplating whether it’s worth it.
You are very welcome. I hope what I wrote will be helpful for others as they research schools and apply. I would be happy to try to answer any questions.
I was raised in Baltimore City too! Now have a “part time” place outside Charleston. My son has applied and is waiting to hear about acceptance this week. I agree Charleston is more of a melting pot than some may think. Charleston natives are not the most welcoming crowd and can refer to newbies as “people from Ohio” while rattling off their lineage. I actually think this is something they have in common with those north of Maryland, who can feel there is the NY area and then wilderness.
While we are from Philly, my family background does include southern roots that I recently traced to the earliest English settlements of Virginia and North Carolina and French settlement of Louisiana. My daughter has moved into an apartment and is working in Charleston this summer with many native Charlestonians. Would it be helpful for her to know her Southern lineage in order to be included socially outside of work? Or does it not matter since our family’s roots trace back not to Charleston but to other parts of the South (and North)?
I’ve found Charleston to be very welcoming of people from all over the country and world. If her lineage is something that she is interested in learning more about, I’d say pursue it, but I don’t feel like it is necessary for socializing outside of work.
