Hey everyone,

I am currently making my final college list and had a question for you all. My school limits students to 12 colleges, so we really have to make a well balanced list. I recently got into Tulane, a school I consider a safety, early action. So that crossed off a lot of other safety schools, except for Richmond and Colby. What's everyone's thoughts on the three schools? Is it worth applying to the other two since I already got into Tulane? The other schools on my list are mostly Ivies and top liberal arts colleges. I am looking to study econ/government/history/math. I am also looking to get a strong foundation in the liberal arts. How do the three schools differ in terms of the kind and quality of education I would receive? Also, how do the three schools differ in terms of reputation in the job market? Where would I receive the best education for my fields of study and the humanities? Also please feel free to add anything else that would help me in making a decision. Thank you so much!

Tulane, Richmond and Colby are not safeties.

Academically I think they are overall pretty even.

Insert the usual pros/cons of national universities and LACs.

I think it really comes down to fit, and much of that comes down to the setting. So:

Tulane is in a nice area of New Orleans, which is an historic, beautiful, and fun city.

Richmond is named for its location, which is an historic, beautiful, and (slightly less) fun city. But it’s closer to DC, Philly, NYC, etc.

Colby is in the middle of nowhere in Maine. It is rural, with long and cold winters… but its natural beauty and outdoors opportunities far exceed those in Nawlins and Richmond.

So academically, they are fairly equal. The choice comes down to lifestyle and (obviously) what you want to study.

hi @prezbucky, by safety school, I meant that I am over the average GPA and test score for accepted students from my school the past few years. I did not in any way mean to demean the three schools.

If you are happy with Tulane as your back-up and you can afford it then you might as well save your applications for the schools you actually want to attend.

Benefits of Richmond, meets full financial need, promises to fund one summer internship or research opportunity per student, if you are exceptional you could be a Richmond Scholar who gets excellent merit money and perks. Lots of living and learning opportunities that can include travel. Good record for alumni job success. Being closer to DC has benefits in variety of speakers. Don’t know much about Colby or Tulane… my daughter wasn’t interested in either due to location.

New Orleans is a world famous tourism destination. Even after u graduate from Tulane, u will jump for any opportunity to visit New Orleans for the joy of just being in New Orleans.

You will visit Richmond & Colby only to go to a reunion. And Richmond is nearly 2 hrs away from DC, so it’s not like you arr going to hop over there casually.

Also Tulane is a university.
