Tulane

My hypothesis was that they might look at tall the options they have of providing aid (merit vs need) for a student. I don’t recall if they asked about FA when my DS applied. We wouldnt have qualified for need based aid, and they didnt have that 75K threshold program in place at that time.

The 75k threshold that you mention. Does that mean that you are not considered for need based aid unless your income is less than 75k? This is what seems so crazy to me. Some of the schools my d has been looking at have income cut offs much much higher than that. With that threshold than forget FA. Ill have her change it to not applying for FA when she sends in the app. for the DHS. As it is, with the Pres. Scholarship, we will be fine in terms of $.

Noooo. The 75K threshold is for their no-loan assistance program [Need-Based Scholarship](http://www.tulane.edu/~finaid/idxneed_NOLA_scholarship.htm)

Im not understanding. I had just gone to the website and read what you posted above. It seems to me that what it is saying is if you make less than 75k adjusted, you are eligible for finacial assistance. That would mean to me that if you make more you are not eligible. No?

malaml-
My understanding is that it means if you make under 75K you are eligible for all grant/no loan scholarships meaning that the FA $$ does not have a portion that has to be taken as a loan-- so you dont owe it back!! Kinda like Harvard/princeton/Stanford - lite :)

Ok. I did not realize that loans were considered aid. I thought aid was made up of grants, need based scholarships etc. So…would someone whose family has an adjusted gross of above 75k with typical assets be eligible for any kind of non loan type of aid?

I am the worlds worst at describing aid, so I will defer to those more knowledgeable. But from my limited understanding, there are several FA calculators on line (one here on CC I believe) that let you plug in some numbers and get a general idea of your EFC. That would , I believe be for the FAFSA only schools, not the CSS schools (and Tulane is a FAFSA/CSS school, meaning you have to fill out both to be considered for need based aid). Aid at most schools typically includes some combo of loans (eg Staffords), campus jobs, and grants . Sometimes there is a gap between the EFC and the FA. Its all very confusing… sorry I am not much help. This is all the more reason to have your dau go for the DHS. It is all free and you don’t have to worry about the amount changing downward if your income changes. To the contrary, it goes up with increases in tuition. You never pay tuition-- only room/board and other junk fees. My DS lives off campus this year. The amount we had to pay to the school, with no boarding (no dorm or meal plan) was ridiculously small. Love it!!!

Yes, well I think the bottom line for me is to plug in some numbers. I have Brown’s information in front of me and their program has a threshold for no loan aid packages as 100k. I think I have come across schools that are even higher than that. Thanks for all your help.

My pleasure. Good luck!! And if it doesnt stress your dau out too much, let her do the DHS (be sure to get that recc form to a teacher as well). If this helps as an incentive, here was the first semester bill from Tulane this year (remember- no room/board charges since he lives off campus and does not have a mealplan), and note, the $1000 NMS payment had not yet been applied/u

So when the NMS applied, we owed a whopping $892 for this semester. Next semseter should be about the same. No actually probably less- with the activity fee and health feee etc already paid. Gotta love it!!!

She is definitly going to apply for it. Thanks. I will let you know how she does.

Good luck!! There is nothing sweeter than finding that UPS package on your doorstep in February!

My Daughter just got an email from Tulane encouraging her to apply for the DHS. Is says they will be offering 75 scholarships.

OK, so that is 3 years in a row of 75.

Congrats, malaml! Hadn’t heard of that before (encouragement to apply). Wonder if someone is reading cc??? ;)

LOL, good one jym.

Little birdies in these threads?? Do the walls have ears??
