Hey,
I was considering Tulane as one of my backups and I was wondering about their condition after Katrina. I was considering majoring in the natural sciences area.

What is the condition of the campus, academic programs, research, etc etc.

More so than the city of New Orleans, Tulane is running just fine, but that's good news and thus the mainstream media have no reason to publicize it. The fact is that, other than modest reductions in student body size (accompanied by some controversial cuts in faculty), the quality of Tulane's academic scene is virtually the same as pre-Katrina.

Re the USNWR ranking, Tulane has always compared well on the objective data measurements. For example, Tulane's student profile, as measured by standardized tests, is slightly higher than several higher ranked colleges (U Michigan, Wake Forest, Lehigh, etc.). Or consider the nature of their classroom offering where they have a 9/1 student/faculty ratio and the fact that only 7% of their classes having greater than 50 students (only 7 colleges in the top 50 do better). Tulane's Achilles Heel is their PA score (25% of their ranking) as academics have never given much credit to this college located in the Deep South.

One bright spot for Tulane post-Katrina is how this episode has brought the students and the school closer together. The commitment to this college making it all the way back (and then some) has probably never been greater. The school and the city are not for everybody and one should visit and decide for themselves, but I think any fears about the quality of the students or the school are misplaced. Tulane can still provide a pretty darn good undergraduate education. And for the right student, Tulane can be the overwhelmingly right choice as there are so many opportunities to contribute to the school and to the community.

agreed. Everyone I know who has attended or is attending Tulane LOVES it. The ONLY question remains the safety of being in New Orleans. But yes, I heard their merit scholarships are out of this world to attract the best students.

i would not worry, my cousin went to tulane, this is his 2nd year, or 1st year forgot lol...he visted i think its in high grounds so not even sure if it was affected by katrina.

the school is great, the campus is well maintained, some parts of the city are still recovering but you probably wont run into those,

as a college student, everything you need is fine: campus, dorms, bourbon street, movies, food and music, jazz fest, voodoo fest... all back at their fullest.
