How competitive is it to get in and when are the auditions?

Auditions for performing groups are held every semester. If you read any firstclass conferences at all(you will learn what these are during orientation) or look down at the ground when you walk, you will find out about auditions.

I did one a cappella audition (Widows), and misread the feedback instructions, so I never got an idea of how well (poorly- I didn't get it), I did. A cappella auditions are usually pretty fun. I had a friend first year who was turned down from the a cappella group she wanted, (toons), and she had an amazing voice, I thought. I don't really know what they look for, usually to fill the niche they have: someone who will blend well. Usually only a couple of students are taken, so in that sense it is competative.
If you want to do music performance, audition for everything.

which singing group "dominates" on campus?

Maybe the Tupelos and the Widows, but that doesn't mean the other groups aren't as good. I loooove how we so many a cappella groups on campus.
