Received acceptance into UT Austin CNS Computer Science last week (non-auto), but I wanted to know my chances of getting Turing’s Scholar.
GPA: 3.9 UW, 4.2 W (Go to competitive public school in California)
SAT 1: 2360
SAT 2: 800 Math 2 and Physics
I’d give you very good chances. Great job on your SATs!

Hey, that’s my post!
Luckily I think UT looks at grades and still values raw intelligence and scholarship, unlike too many other schools. Based on who gets accepted to what program, I have found out that grades matter so little that it is absolutely ridiculous. People who take the easy way by blowing off school and just doing 1 thing they like get waaay more respect than hard working students who value scholarship.
American culture is sadly moving away from a strong work culture to one that seeks to seem progressive and different just for fashion or whatever-the-heck. There is no emphasis on working hard, and the entire idea of working is seen as being “try-hard” and “uncool” even though people who hit the books and actually learned were the ones who helped build this society in the first place. When I see students in my school who do nothing but debate, flunk everything due to apathy, act obscene 24/7, and still get an interview from Harvard just from “extra curricular activities”, I know something is wrong.
Almost every research opportunity and program requires “prior experience,” so those who enjoy learning and excel in class who are more academically qualified for opportunities are taken out by students who don’t study but instead spend a minuscule amount of time on some project or the other. Thus, those who toil the least get the most, and those who spend their time filling themselves with knowledge and awareness get no opportunity to apply their vast knowledge.
Any thoughts? This whole admission situation and attitude itself frustrates me (sorry if I am hijacking this conversation).
@CognitioInvictus This is an older thread. May be better to start a new one if you want to start a conversation.
