Turning down Berkeley for...

Aren't they all?

Hard to figure why people would choose a school like USC over CAL? Must be $$

Or maybe to play football? I suspect that if I was offered football scholarships at USC and Cal, I'd probably take USC. Especially if I thought I had a legitimate shot at getting to the NFL.

Don't get me wrong. I agree that there are few academic reasons to choose USC over Cal. But academics are not the only factor on the table.

Arizona State

I agree there are other reasons than academics Sakky, but athletes don't apply to schools. A good friend was recruited by UCLA, USC and UofA to play baseball. He never applied to any schools. He had offers from the schools before I sent in my UC application. He did have to take the SAT though, and get a minimum score of 1300 on the new SAT to get into USC... He turned down both USC and UCLA for UofA.

Wel USC costs way more that CAL does, so idk why people would turn down CAL for USC financially. I personally, got a nice scholarship to USC, which ended up making it aa little less expensive than CAL. My major is also much stronger at USC<which is why I chose it over CAL.

I still think CAL's an amazing school though, and would have probably gone if I was interested in a different field.

Colgate University

I'll be honest and direct: why would people turn down Cal for USC? It's not as good and it costs more. (Now I shield myself from the barrage of rocks.)

I think you are wrong guidez. I got a full ride to USC and still turned it down to pay more to CAL. Money isn't everything to everyone, to some it may be. There's plenty of financial aid for those from schools like USC, that's why a lot of students choose USC versus choosing a better program elsewhere for less money. With the exception of Film, Cal ranks on a much higher level. Everyone has their own reasons. With USC it's not the money because so few pay the full price.

My dad didn't want me to apply to USC because he said it isn't good.

Wait, CA2006, my point was exactly that it's not about the money. I would pay more to go to USC, it just ends up that I'm paying about the same. And, USC is better than CAL in a few areas, like music, theatre, cinema...

NeedAdvice, I asked myself the same question when I was applying to colleges. But really, for me, it was the feeling I got the second I walked on to the USC campus. USC is a family, and you just get an overwhelming sense of that when you step onto the campus, whereas CAL is not. But it's all personal preference, and for me USC was the better choice. I'm not dissing CAL or anything btw, I know it's an amazing school, I'm just saying that USC is equally awesome, and that is why so many people have turned CAL down for it.

Guidez, I agree about the music, theatre and cinema. Good luck at USC.

thanks, and same to you at CAL. Honestly, I think both are equally amazing schools (in different areas of course), and anyone should be extremely happy at either.

Cornell. personal preference of environment plus quantity and quality of biology programs

I am really interested in seeing the cross-admit stats between Cal and Cornell. It seems like many people are deciding between the two and I have seen plenty of cases go both ways.

University of Chicago.

Guidez...well it's true what you said about music, drama (USC vs. Berkeley). I heard Berkeley's drama department is a joke and we literally have approx. 5 music majors.

UCLA...close to home

NeddAdvice, I've heard good things about the music dept at Cal from a former roommate who was a major and a few other friends who minored, I wouldn't dismiss it.

USC's film school is better than Cal's.

That's about it.

Carleton College, mostly because of the financial aid (I'm out of state) and smaller classes.
