I turned down Cal for UCSD mostly because of pressure from my family. I honestly LOVED Cal! But I need to be close to my family and such so I'm going to San Diego it's much closer...I'll miss going to Berkeley though :( Oh and UCSD apparently has a better bio program or something like that and it's better for my major! yayy!

berenelen, LOL! except not. and ab_med, USC is a low caliber school? ***? What planet are you living on? ALso, everybody does not get in. As a matter of fact, the accpetance rate was 24% this year. I know CAL's was lower, but still. Damn, you livin' in a hole brother!

Guidez: The above is YOUR post! Take a look around USC. What are going to be living in?

turning down berkeley for...
Duke

If close to 100 people get in from one school, then its not good. I know 2 girls that have dads that are buying their way to SC. USC is a school for money-hungry conservatives that dont have stats to get in to other top universities.

o yeah and i forgot to say that my dad was a prof at USC for about 7 years and i have haeard horror stories from him about the quality of students there

CA2006: What are going to be living in?

The above was your post. It doesn't make any sense! I've been to USC, it's awesome!!! I'm sincerely sorry you don't agree.

ab_med, you're wrong also. Tons of people at USC reject top schools. For example, myself. I rejected both Northwestern and Cal for USC. Get your facts straight.

guidez89, USC pads its stats with Cal rejects. Cal could fill its class with perfect SATs/GPAs but it doesn't. USC cooks its numbers, like admitting legacies for the spring semester or splitting SAT top scores. Some students prefer USC over Cal (conservative kids who don't want to leave LA or conservative kids from elsehwere who couldn't get into better private schools) but let's not get carried away here.

"USC has much much better music and drama. Cinema's a given. CAL music isn't bad, but it certainly isn't comparable to USC's. Seriously, USC has tons of Grammy winners, and really top-of-the-line professors. You can't get much better at a University."

Indiana is definitely better than USC, and I know that Cal's isn't far behind Indiana's music dept. Grammys are trash culture. If you have any real rankings of music depts, post them.

This being said, there is no question that Cal kicks USC's @$$ in the 30 other depts that both schools field. You can only ride your film school so far...

haha....i remember what one of my profs at Cal told the class when USC football beat Cal two seasons ago. He said something to the extent of: "don't feel bad if Cal lost...I mean, you guys came to Berkeley for the academics, while USC only has its football team to be proud of....imagine how those USC kids would feel if their football team lost Saturday's game..."

USC is where i'd have went if I got rejected from UC Riverside......and everywhere else I applied to. Then again, I didn't even apply to UCR as a backup, so I didn't even waste my money applying to USC as ITS backup. Believe it or not, some people go to college for academics rather than for sports and theater.

In all fairness, some students could prefer USC to Cal, despite the fact that Cal's academics are superior, a bit similarly to how some could prefer USC to UCLA. But by and large, Cal is more widely appealing.

Thanks for that last post CalX, it is accurate, but the one where you mention that Indiana is better than USC is blatantly wrong. Even in term of music, Indiana is not even close. When you think of TOP TIER music schools, names that should come to mind are : Northwestern, USC, Julliard... Cal is good in music, but it doesn't really compare to USC (however CAL does have a phenomenal music library). And, just for the record, CAL is obviously a great school, but I chose USC over CAL because it was far better in my discipline.

guidez89: Have a fantastic time at 'SC. My friend is there right now: a brilliant student who was accepted to 'SC as a junior in high school, and finished his senior year in high school as a 'SC freshman. He's not too thrilled about the atmosphere there (he's now finishing his second year there) and some of the attitudes of the students, but no doubt, he loves his professors and has many close friends.

USC is a fantastic school. For some, 'SC doesn't suit their tastes, but it's quite apparent that 'SC is perfect for you. Turning down Cal was a great decision for a school you feel comfortable at and somewhere you'll enjoy your college years. And contrary to popular sentiments, at USC, you will receive a fine education.

Guidez: My brother is a USC graduate class of 2005, Viterbi Engineering, rejected from CAL and Stanford.I have stayed in the dorms and his off campus university owned apt many times in the 4 years he was a student at SC. I have seen the dorms at Berkeley. They are the same, although I have not heard that Berkeley has a HUGE RAT INFESTATION they cannot get under control in the dorms like SC does!
I have had other family members and friends graduate from SC and am familiar with the campus. I stayed overnight in Feb when I was there for my scholarship interview. I didn't think the food was any better than Crossroads at CAL when I stayed there for the overnight.
It is proven in statistics that CAL is better academically than USC. You are the one putting down CAL for whatever reason. To say "it's a hole" is obvious you don't have a clue what you are talking about. I have no reason to knock USC. I have friends that attend USC and visit them on often, my brother graduated last year and I am a USC legacy kid.
You made your choice of schools, I believe I previously wished you the best of luck there. What are you doing hanging around picking fights? :)

Lets not hate on 'SC too much. They have started to focus on academics, for whatever reason, and have been buying Nobel laureautes and investing in senior faculty.

"Lets not hate on 'SC too much"

At least until football season. At that time you should let the hate flow.

CA2006: I NEVER said CAL was a hole, I merely said "what kind of hole are you living in". That my friend, is an expression!

I never said CAL was not better than USC academically, it is, and I even said so in some of my points. Did you read my posts???? You, CA2006, are reading into things WAY too much. I never ever showed hate for CAL, I was just trying to convey my reasons for turning it down. You need to chill. seriously. I never even tried to pick a fight, I was annoyed with everyone saying USC sucked, so I stuck up for my school, I didnt even diss CAL! I SIMPLY STATED THE REASONS WHY SOMEONE WOULD/COULD TURN CAL DOWN FOR USC, like me. All I've had to say are good things about CAL, but obviously, you didn't get that. Have fun at CAL btw, I know it's a great school... USC was just a better fit for me.

guidez, my roommate who was a musician and a music major at Cal thought that Indiana (and Julliard of course) were tops.

CalX, I'm a musician myself, and when visiting both USC and Julliard, both schools talked about "the top 7", the 7 music schools that often compete for music students. Yale was among the schools, but I don't recall Indiana...

What isntrument was he? It also depends on the instrument, but USC is definitely one of the TOP music schools. no questions.

Hm, I play two instruments as well--, given I'm not a music major, but the most famous music uni is Julliard and perhaps Oberlin? (I really don't know, but those are the two I've heard of most often). I haven't heard of Indiana or Yale being great in music.
