Turning down Harvard for...?

awww! =) that's so true! lol i take it to heart =)

There's been discussion on other threads that one can assess financial aid approaches only by gaining admission to more than one school and comparing offers. Any of you who have posted here care to share which school, after subtracting grants/scholarships (not loans/workstudy), would have been the least expensive?

to parent2: Harvard. not kidding O_O

My friends who got their MBAs at Harvard agree that they feel it's a better place for grad school than undergrad (I've met many undergrads who would beg to differ). One got her BA from Brown. Her hubby got his BA from UMichigan.

Is MIT2010 stupid or what? No offence, but what courses at MIT are sooo good? Also specify your particular choice of courses at MIT.

thequaker: pre-med at Harvard is not horrible. I found study groups and have done well on exams and such, getting a B+/A grade (wonderful grades for med school) is not too difficult as long as you're willing to put in the work.

"Is MIT2010 stupid or what?"

Yes, harvardguy thinks I'm stupid because you chose Harvard. Yes, I'm stupid, humm? The academic atmosphere in MIT is very attractive, although Harvard has more party and social events than MIT. It's much easier to do undergraduate research at MIT. I mean both are extraordinary schools, but I can only choose one--go for MIT. Harvard better in technology? Bettter in computer science? Better in engineering? No, no, no, and everyboyd knows that's true.

Look at the rankings in MIT at <a href="http://www.mit.edu/%7Emenchu/facts/html/factsmain.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.mit.edu/~menchu/facts/html/factsmain.html</a>. If you can find more than half of these specific rankings are higher in Harvard (which is impossible), prove it. Show us the link. If I remember correctly, the engineering ranking for Harvard is like 40 something (is it comparable to teh #1 MIT?).

harvardguy, you should feel very sorry for calling me stupid. If you can get into both MIT and Harvard, are you stupid? Sad realization.

harvard doesn't really have a social life

xjayz - yeah, i think if you're willing to be realllllly focused on science it's probably fine (although still hard and stressful?). My thing is that I really want to explore other academic/extracurricular areas as well as be pre-med, and study abroad (not necessarily somewhere where there's a lab where I can work... which is what they suggest according to a panel i went to). Although I'm good at math/science, neither subject comes as easily to me as english/spanish/history do. It would be sad for me to have to pull back my efforts in other academic/extracurricular areas just to focus on math/science so i could get into med school. I think depending on the type of student you want to be, pre-med at harvard either works for you or not so much. For me, PLME at Brown will allow me to become a doctor without forcing me to compromise the quality of my undergraduate experience and education.

thequaker: Totally understandable, I'm just putting it out there for prospective students that Harvard's pre-med students are just not as competitive as other schools' students.

In my case, I am not a science major at all (and I know plenty more who are Romance Languages, Social Studies, History, East Asian Studies, etc. and are pre-med) and my high school did not even have AP Bio, Chem or Physics (our only "science" AP was AP Environmental Science). I've found the support system here to be wonderful and I've been doing very well by putting in the effort as well. I still have a life though! I've had a blast here my freshman year. I went to a ton of concerts put on by HRO and the Holden Choirs (The three performed the Messiah last night and that was just an AMAZING experience), parties (which college doesn't?), talks by politicians at the IOP, intramurals, etc.

Best of luck in your endeavors, thequaker. Brown's PLME program is great.

If any of you are thinking about Harvard and pre-med, definitely shoot me a PM if you would like to have any questions answered. I think justforgetme is also pre-med as well.

Well, I assume that YOU are Miguel Menchu and that web page is yours. I could provide a lot of data for my assertions but for now how about these two things in reply to your facts:

Go to Times Higher Education Supplement web page at <a href="http://www.thes.co.uk/worldrankings/%5B/url%5D">http://www.thes.co.uk/worldrankings/</a>
I guess the data they collected and analyzed is much more authentic than what you provided in your web page ;)

How come the About MIT section of MIT is so full of data that tries to prove that MIT is No.1 at everything but Harvard dosen't even bother to mention any vanity points? ;) ;)

fscottie--Princeton, from what I hear, is still isolated in the sense that the immediate area is sparse. Let's be honest, if you go there, you can go to NYC or Philly on occasional weekends or whenever, but that's not where you really live.

Harvardguy--Ouch! What an over-reaction. Many, MANY people turn Harvard down for MIT, especially people in the sciences. I would take Harvard over MIT any day for my particular branch of science but that's the exception, not the rule. Harvard is great at lots of things, but in the majority of sciences, it doesn't approach MIT.

guitarman why are you choosing yale?

i thought u got into mit

GuitarManARS-- Well I seem to find so many exceptions to the rule that I had to choose this particularly offensive and controvertial approach, just to systematically find the truth and maybe the ultimate Ivory Tower.

Harvardguy you sound absolutely ridiculous, i think MIT2010 was smart in choosing MIT over Harvard for science. Just because you think that you are better than others doesn't mean you can put down other people, and im sure MIT2010 will do great at MIT.

I got into MIT indeed. MIT's astronomy is not what I'm looking for (I prefer Yale's, to be honest--it's one of MIT's few weak points, I think), and I want the exposure to a more diverse group of people and courses that Yale offers. Same reason I turned down Caltech, I'll be specializing in science my whole life, I don't want to start that four years early.

Harvardguy--First of all, it's spelled "controversial". Even though Harvard is a fantastic school, it is not #1 in every regard. Surely you can realize this. If you are choosing on a basis purely related to your academic field (which some people don't--I myself didn't, if I did I'd be going to Caltech, but MIT2010 might very well have), then for most sciences (especially engineering--that can't really even be debated), MIT is the better choice, plain and simple.

P.S. Harvardguy, your attack on the site MIT2010 cited is completely unfounded. He's using US News data, which is very similar to the Times Sunday data. One's American, one's British, and they have slightly different criteria. By the way, if you'll notice, overall the US News data MIT2010 gave DID rank Harvard higher, overall, as does the Times (albeit by a lesser margin). But when you get science-specific, it's much different. Does the Times have sci-specific rankings where Harvard edges out MIT?

guitarman, i think ur contradicting yourself.

most poeple who get into mit and harvard would choose harvard over mit since

most people who get into mit will be specializing science their whole lives, they wouldnt want to start that four years early.

GuitarManARS-- Wasn't controvertial controversial ;)
Just beacuse Harvard has a small Science and Engineering department doesn't mean it is worse than MIT. MIT can't be that simple a choice.
