Turnitin.com

Hi guys. I got in an argument with my parents over an assignment I turned in late on turnitin.com.

My teacher specifically said that if you turn in an assignment late, whether it be in class or on turnitin.com, it's 10 points off.

I turned in my assignment late on turnitin.com, I got docked 10 points, and I decided that was that and I decided not to pester my teacher about refunding me those 10 points I lost for turning in my assignment late. I decided to act mature and own up to the consequences without fussing over it with my teacher because the rule about late assignments was crystal clear and if I did fuss over the 10 points I'd be essentially asking my teacher to contradict his own syllabus and words and give me 10 points I do not deserve.

On the other hand, my parents vehemently protest my silence. They say that teachers are humans, and are lenient. They want me to see my teacher about the 10 points I lost. They claim that I don't know how teachers work.

My question is: who is correct? Me or my parents? No, I don't want to appear unconcerned about my grades to my teacher, but somethings are better left unsaid. I find no reason to even broach the issue of the 10 points I lost for turning in my assignment late because the rules were 100% clear. I also decided not to broach the issue to appear mature - I don't want to appear like a fussy kid who irrationally wants a favor from the teacher. On the other hand, my parents tell me that the teacher could quite possibly refund the 10 points. I think that the probability of this is about 1 lucky student in one billion, and not worth pursuing. What do you think?

Well if actually did not have the paper ready to hand in at the appropriate time, then you should own up to the consequences. If you had the paper done, but just forgot about turning it in at turnitin.com, then you could take it up. Also consider how much you need those 10 points with respect to your grade. Is it worth the risk of having a bad rep with the teacher if it doesn’t affect your grade immensely? I guess you can’t go wrong with asking whether you can redeem those ten points, but don’t argue more if he/she says no.

^I had the hard copy of the assignment turned in on time, but I forgot to turn the paper in on turnitin.com. I don’t really need those 10 points anyway - I have a plan to pull off an A in the class anyway. So I don’t have anything to gain by asking my teacher about those 10 points …

I guess you have a point about having the hard copy of the assignment ready. I personally find it ridiculous that the teacher docks 10 points just for not turning a paper in online when a student already turned in the hard copy online. I mean, the teacher only reads the hard copy. The paper is only submitted to turnitin so the paper can be checked for plagiarism …

Still, the endgame is the same - I have an A in the class no matter the 10 points or not :).

Yeah the whole, “you are forced to turn it in @ turnitin.com” business is very annoying especially when teachers only look at the hard copies.

Tell them no. You have an A regardless, and you risk ****ing your teacher off with no tangible benefit.
