Hi, I am a 15, almost 16 year old sophomore who is looking to tutor people. This past year I tutored someone in Spanish for $15 an hour. I was wondering what is a good rate and how do I spread the word about my tutoring?
Thanks!
A good rate depends on where you are. I’m a high school teacher in NY-- I make a LOT more than $15 an hour.
But $15 an hour, for someone who would otherwise be making minimum wage, sounds pretty good to me.
If you’re looking to tutor high school kids, go to guidance and ask them how you can get your name out there. They have a process already in place, you just need to find out what it is.
If you’re looking to tutor middle or elementary school kids, type up a letter you can send to each school in your neighborhood. Include last year’s grades, so they know that you know your stuff. Also include any honors you’ve won. Speak to your mom or dad about where they would want you to tutor-- they will NOT want you going to a stranger’s home. (Lots of people tutor in the local library-- look into that. It’s quiet enough that you can tutor, but you’re in a public place.)
@bjkmom Thanks so much! I live in a pretty small town (Like there about 180 kids in my grade. I could charge $20 probably, but I don’t live in a major city or densely populated area (16,000 people in town)
Honestly, I think it’s a good idea to charge less as you build your reputation.

And keep track of your income (and related expenses), if you have net earnings of over $400 from self-employment you will have to file a tax return.
In our school district some students also tutor other students for free to satisfy the service requirement of their National Honor Society membership.
Wow, I think that’s a good deal ! Tutors here in NJ charge $40+ an hour!
